Indianapolis, IN --- WPI Track & Field will be sending five men and two women to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships which will be hosted by Mount Union Thursday through Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The quartet of junior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA), freshman Alex Rus (Newton, MA), sophomore Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) and junior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD), along with alternate junior Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH), is ranked 12th in the 4x400-meter relay. The configuration of Kelly, Rus, Schoenhagen and Staver set the school record at the All-New England All-Divisions (NEICAAA) Championships on Saturday, May 13 with a 3:16.88 before Kelly, Rus, Wittenberg and Staver bettered the standard with their qualifying time of 3:14.60 at the Oneonta Final Qualifier Wednesday evening.
Freshman Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) will be making her second trip on behalf the University this year in the 800-meter run. The indoor participant reclaimed the school record at the MIT Last Chance Meet with the eight-ranked time of 2:10.82. Junior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) will also head to Ohio to contest the 800 with the 15th-quickest time of 2:11.57, which was achieved at the DIII New England Championships.
Junior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) narrowly missed an invite by one declaration while senior Kimberlee Kocienski (Schaghticoke, NY) and Staver were four and nine away, respectively, as all eligible student athletes declared in their respective races. Weeks achieved a PR of 195 feet this week in the javelin at MIT to rank 25th while Kocienski's 400-meter hurdles PR of 1:02.65 at the NEICAAA meet is 26th and Staver's MIT, and school record, 400-meter dash time of 48.32 is 29th.
