Norton, MA --- Sophomore Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) set a new WPI record as Men's Track & Field took part in the non-scoring Wheaton Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Engineers faced Bridgewater State, Conn. College, Wheelock and host Wheaton.
Gaziano bettered the 60-meter hurdle record to 8.30 seconds in the trials. It is the third time the mark has been improved, and second time it has changed ownership, in just two weeks. Pending other results, Gaziano is ranked 12th in Division III while freshman Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), last week's record holder, is tied for 17th. Freshman Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) posted an 8.40 this week to rank 22nd in the country. Thomas (8.54) was as a half second ahead of Gaziano (8.94) to claim the top spot in the finals. The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of sophomore Alex Rus (Newton, MA), senior Andrew Kelly (Medford, MA), graduate student Austin Scott (Waddington, NY) and freshman Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) posted the 11th-best time of 3:25.08 (3:21.86). Freshman Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) is now 40th on the Division III performance list with a clearance of 14-6.25 in the pole vault.
Junior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) and freshman Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA) needed 7.11 and 7.12, respectively to finish 1-2 in the 60-meter dash as Adiletta and senior Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) were 1-2 in the 200-meter dash with times of 23.07 and 23.78. Junior Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:21.83 and was followed by Staver with a 1:21.99.
The pole vault and long jump events also saw an Engineer in first and second. Senior David Frederick (Orono, ME) posted a height of 14-0.5 to place second behind Bradley as sophomore Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) registered a 21-3.25 and senior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) recorded a personal-best 20-11.75 in the long jump.
Junior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) turned in a PR with a time of 15:42.47 in the 5,000-meter run, as did classmate Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) with a 16:07.37.
