Atlanta, GA --- Sophomore Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) and senior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) jumpstarted the WPI Outdoor Track & Field season with impressive 800-meter run performances Saturday at Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational. They were also the only Division III female student-athletes at the meet. The lone DIII men's competitor reresented Emory in the 110-meter hurdles.
Packard broke up a quartet from Florida State with a new school record, and second-place, time of 2:09.34. It is the second time in three outdoor races the sophomore reset the WPI standard.
Strangio, meanwhile, finished eighth in a time of 2:14.09, the senior's best to start a campaign. It was also quicker than the entries from Georgia State and DII Lee (TN). The fastest of the four heats also featured a pair from Georgia Tech.
While very early in the season, the duo is ahead of the 167 performances already reported as of Saturday afternoon.
The rest of the track & field program begins the outdoor season March 31 at the Tufts Snowflake Invitational.
