Rus, Steeves & DeVine Win as Men’s Track & Field Second at Tufts in Outdoor Opener

Medford, MA --- Sophomore Alex Rus (Newton, MA), freshman Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) and senior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) earned gold as the WPI men's track & field team placed second in the outdoor season opener Saturday at the Tufts Snowflake Classic.

The hosts won the 20-team meet with 153 points. The Engineers followed with 119 as Bridgewater State was third (70), Wesleyan was fourth (56) and Westfield State was fifth (50).

Rus needed only 49.79 to take the 400-meter dash while seniors Warren Staver (Centreville, MD) and Paul-Henry Schoenhagen (Cleveland Heights, OH) placed second (49.80) and third (50.37). Rus and Staver's times are currently 1-2 on the NEWMAC performance list. Steeves broke the tape with a NEWMAC-leading 1:56.27 in the 800-meter run and DeVine achieved a distance of 22-6.25 to win the long jump.

Freshman Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH), sophomore Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) and rookie Mark Bray (Shrewsbury, MA) made the 110-meter hurdle finals and placed second (15.56), fifth (15.78) and eighth (16.81), respectively. Freshman Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) was also a runner up with a clearance of 13-5.25 in the pole vault. He was followed by classmate Nathaniel Shimkus (Hope Valley, RI) in fifth (12-11.5).

The 4x400-meter relay foursome of Rus, Staver, junior Thomas Mackintosh (Ellington, CT) and freshman Yossef Naim (Marlboro, MA) was second with a time of 3:23.39 and the 4x100-meter relay consisting of sophomore Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), Thomas, freshman Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA) and junior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) claimed third with the fastest NEWMAC time thus far (43.47). Junior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) was third among collegiate competitors with a 15:25.01 in the 5,000-meter run. Senior Aaron Weeks (Pittsfield, MA) also took home bronze as he sent the javelin 176-5.

DeVine added a fourth-place height of 6-4 in the high jump. Both his jumps are atop the NEWMAC scrolls. Senior Brandon Hoghaug (Douglas, MA), meanwhile, was sixth (6-2). Sophomore Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:07.39) as did sophomore Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:24.01). Gaziano took sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.32).

Sophomore William Kopellas (Needham, MA) was seventh in the 100-meter dash finals in a time of 11.73. Senior Patrick Wang (Beijing, China) launched the hammer 133-11 and discus 123-01 to place seventh and eighth for the Engineers. Freshman Parker Simpson (Enfield, CT) picked up a point with an eighth-place 40-10.25 in the triple jump.
