Medford, MA --- Freshman Elizabeth Kirschner (Hamilton, MA) and junior Kendra O'Malley (Charlton, MA) earned silver in the triple jump and hammer throw, respectively, as the WPI women's track & field team tied for fourth Saturday at the Tufts Snowflake Classic. Kirschner leaped just over 35 feet (35-1) and O'Malley sent the hammer 146-3.
Tufts (187) more than doubled the points generated by the second place team from Trinity (88.5). Conn. College was third (64) as the Engineers and Westfield State were fourth (63) out of 22 teams.
Freshman Arden Tanner (Ventura, CA) was third in the 200-meter dash with a 26.02 while sophomore Ari Rozen (Carver, MA) came home third (11:59.95) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Both are atop the NEWMAC performance list. Senior Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) followed in eighth (12:17.11). Classmate Kirsten Herchenroder (Plaistow, NH), who also placed sixth in the hammer (129-11), took third in the discus with a distance of 121-5. The field events also saw junior Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) place third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-0.5. Senior Brittney Lambert (Hudson, NH) also topped 5-0.5, but tied for fifth.
The 4x100-meter relay quartet of senior Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA), senior Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT), Tanner and freshman Katy Nippert (Salem, NH) came home fourth in a time of 50.18. Rookie Kelley Townley (Liverpool, NY) soared 9-8 for fifth in the pole vault. Teed also secured sixth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.30), which is also the fastest in the conference thus far, as junior Katie Nugent (Huntington, CT) was only .06 behind in seventh. Freshman Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT) posted a seventh-place 2:26 in her outdoor 800-meter run debut.
