New London, CT --- Sophomore Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) reset her own 1,500-meter run record as the WPI women's track & field team handed in a number of personal and season bests en route to a sixth place finish at the Silfen Invitational.
Division II East No. 1 Stonehill took the team title with 189 points. Division III No. 3 Tufts was second (89.5), host Connecticut College was third (82), Coast Guard was fourth (64) and Amherst rounded out the top 5 with 60.5. The DIII NE No. 10 Engineers bested No. 9 Trinity (7th – 51) and Division II East No. 4 New Haven (13th – 23).
In addition to the first day of the heptathlon, Friday featured the Elite Distance portion of the event comprised of the fastest seeded heats of the steeplechase, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m.
Packard was third with a time of 4:40.04 while senior Lea Strangio (Watertown, MA) was the runner up in the 800-meter run with a 2:17.42. Senior Emily Newman (Easton, MA) handed in a season best 18:15.89 and sophomore Callie Schadt (Brewster, MA) established a new personal best with an 18:30.59 in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Ari Rozen (Carver, MA) (6th - 11:44.92), freshman Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) (12:08.74) and senior Emma MacIntyre (Grand Island, NY) (12:08.82) all clocked PRs in the steeplechase.
Freshman Katy Nippert (Salem, NH), freshman Arden Tanner (Ventura, CA), senior Taylor Teed (Boxford, MA) and senior Sara Velleca (Woodbury, CT) took third in the 4x100-meter relay with a season-best and NEWMAC-leading 49.22. Tanner claimed third (12.59) and Teed took eighth (12.77) in the 100-meter dash, while Teed was also fourth (26.28) in the 200-meter dash. Senior Kirsten Herchenroder (Plaistow, NH) earned bronze in the discus (122-3) achieved a PR with a heave of 34-4.25 in the shot put.
Junior Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) tied for fourth by clearing 10-2 in the pole vault as freshman Elizabeth Kirschner (Hamilton, MA) leaped 34-7.5 to place fourth and sophomore Nicole Mattson (Marion, MA) secured sixth (33-6) in the triple jump. Sophomore Faye Gauthier (West Warwick, RI) sent the hammer a season-best and sixth-place 150-5.
The 4x800-meter relay foursome of senior Gina Capobianco (Colonie, NY), Nistler, MacIntyre and freshman Amanda Lowther (Syracuse, NY) added a sixth-place time of 10:24.78. Senior Abby McAdams (Montville, CT) accumulated 3,665 points which was good for eighth in the heptathlon.
WPI concludes the regular season with Williams and Middlebury Saturday in Williamstown.
