Chabot Collects Fourth NEWMAC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year Honor

Westwood, MA --- Head Coach Brian Chabot has been named as the 2018 NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year. He has now earned seven such honors from his peers, including both men's and women's laurels in 2016 and the NEWMAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors this past fall.

Chabot, in his 10th year guiding the track & field teams, earns his fourth men's nod following another second place finish at the conference championship this past weekend that saw sophomore Alex Rus (Newton, MA) and freshman Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) garner NEWMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year and NEWMAC Men's Track & Field Rookie of the Year, respectively. The Engineers set the program record for points at the meet with 221.5 while the 53 point margin of difference was the second best only to 2014 (38.5) over the seven-year span MIT and WPI have been 1-2.

Rus and Thomas earned NEWMAC All-Conference first team accolades as part of the NEWMAC champion 4x100-meter relay before Rus set the WPI and NEWMAC Championship record with a triumph in the 400-meter dash. Rus also set a school record in the 200-meter dash with a runner up performance. In all, the Crimson and Gray totaled seven individuals and one relay on the NEWMAC All-Conference second team.

Additionally, senior Jack DeVine (Wilbraham, MA) was selected to represent the Engineers on the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team. More on that next week.

The team heads to MIT this weekend for the Division III New England Championships.
