Wittenberg Becomes Fifth-Fastest Man in D-III Track & Field Indoor 800m History at BU

Boston, MA --- In a meet that saw numerous outstanding performances by the WPI men's track & field team, senior Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) set a school record and posted the top 800-meter run time in Division III this season Saturday at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Even more impressive, his 1:49.89 is also fifth all-time in NCAA Division III indoor history.

Wittenberg also clocked the quickest split (48.538) in the 4x400-meter run that also included junior Alex Rus (Newton, MA), senior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) and junior Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH). The quartet's total time of 3:18.39 ranks 10th on the NCAA Division III leaderboard. Harris, who entered the week ranked 20th in the 200-meter run, also set a school record with the third-ranked time of 21.58.

Sophomore Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) placed sixth overall and was second of three runners from Division III with an 8.21 in the 60-meter hurdle finals. Sophomore Malek Elshakhs (Storrs, CT) recorded an 8.66 while freshman Anthony Algieri (Nutley. NJ) handed in an 8.80 and junior Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) posted an 8.93.

The 800m also saw sophomore Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) and freshman Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA) secure PRs of 1:55.57 and 1:55.81, respectively. Freshman Jackson Hauman (South Burlington, VT) posted a 2:01.00 and junior Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) handed in a 2:01.82. Sophomore Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA) crossed the 200m finish line in just 22.33. Fleury was next in 22.82, followed by sophomore Oliver Thomas (Goffstown, NH) in 22.88, and junior William Kopellas (Needham, MA) registered a 23.32.

Freshman Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) headlined the mile with a 4:18.76. Freshman Andrew Yatsuhashi (Reading, MA) and senior Remington Gaetjens (Limerick, ME) each ran a personal best with times of 4:25.79 and 4:31.62. Junior Tom Hanlon (Derry, NH) crossed the finish line in 4:22.77 as junior Avery Ingegneri (Warwick, RI) delivered a 4:23.62, senior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) clocked a 4:27.31 and junior Jake Scarponi (Barrington, NH) registered a 4:28.83.

Rus ran a season-best 49.19 in the 400-meter run. Sophomore Yossef Naim (Marlboro, MA) and freshman Devin Coughlin (Newton, MA) were .2 seconds apart with times of 51.66 and 51.86. Sophomore Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) cleared 14-9 in the pole vault.

The Engineers head to Springfield Saturday for an 11am invitational.
