Amherst, MA --- Junior Alex Rus (Newton, MA) and sophomore Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) each collected silver and bettered a Division III New England qualifying mark as the WPI men's track & field team finished fifth Saturday at the UMass Minuteman Invitational.
Collectively the lone Division III team in the meet totaled 59.33 points, which was better than Hartford (50.5), Vermont (40) and Bryant (30.5). The hosts won the title with 226.33 points, followed by Dartmouth (124), Brown (103.83) and Northeastern (90).
In addition to also earning entry into the NEICAAA Championship meet with a second-place 49.04 in the 400-meter dash, Rus improved on his 200-meter D3 NE qualifying time from a week ago with a fifth-place 22.30. Junior Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH) also qualified for the Division III regional meet with a 22.99 in the 200m. Bradley, meanwhile, was in a three-way tie for second with a height of 14-5.25 in the pole vault, which was also an improvement on his previous D3 NE performance.
Senior Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 135-11, and sophomore Sullivan Boyd (Woolwich, ME) was fifth (144-0) and freshman Aman Bhatti (Medway, MA) was eighth (118-0) in the hammer. Senior Michael Brady (Medway, MA) took fifth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:25.18 and was followed by sophomore Logan Gaudette (Holden, MA) with an eighth-place 16:01.63.
Also placing fifth was junior William Kopellas (Needham, MA) with a 21-6.75 in the long jump, and the duo of junior Garth Hull (Arlington, MA) and freshman Mike Reilly (Stoneham, MA) who tied for the spot in the high jump with a clearance of 5-9.75. Junior Mike Corace (Spotswood, NJ) tossed the javelin 164-3 to take sixth while senior Evan Bossio (Pittsfield, MA) placed ninth (155-8).
Freshman Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA), freshman Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT), junior Kevin O'Driscoll (Norwell, MA) and sophomore Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) took sixth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:28.39. Sophomore Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA) was seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.25) while classmate Malek Elshakhs (Storrs, CT) claimed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.79), followed by junior Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) with a Division III New England time of 16.20.
The shot put and 400-meter hurdles saw an Engineer place seventh and ninth. Junior Matt Jankowski (Burlington, MA) sent the projectile 44-7.5 as freshman Sam Furman (Groton, MA) narrowly missed out on a team point with a 41-8 while juniors Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) and Gaziano were faster than the regional meet cutoff time with a 57.51 and 57.96, respectively.
Fleury, Rus, Adiletta and senior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) clocked an eighth-place 43.85 in the 4x100-meter relay, and senior Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) clocked a 4:00.40 in the 1,500-meter run.
WPI travels to the Conn. College Silfen Invitational & Multi-Event Meet this weekend, which begins with the Elite Distance and multis on Friday.
