Amherst, MA --- Sophomore Katy Nippert (Salem, NH) set a school record and senior Carley Dykstra (Andover, NJ) took second in the pole vault as the WPI women's track & field team was seventh at Saturday's UMass Minuteman Invitational.
The only Division III program at the meet posted 26.5 points, just ahead of Hartford (23.5) and Bryant (11). The hosts accumulated 183 points to claim the team title. Dartmouth (144.5) was second, URI (106) was third, Brown (103) was fourth and Vermont was fifth (54), and Northeastern was sixth (49.5).
Nippert was fifth with a leap of 17-10.75 to reset her own record and qualify for the Division III New England Championships. Freshman Katherine Pawlak (Westford, MA) is also now allowed to compete in the regional meet with an eighth-place 17-0.5. Dykstra tied her outdoor best of 12-1.5 as freshman Bridget Wirtz (Branford, CT) tied for sixth (10-8) in the pole vault. Senior Xandria Korn (Woodinville, WA) tied for ninth in the high jump and improved on last week's D3NE performance with a 5-3.25.
Freshman Victoria Carreiro (Westerly, RI) came home third with a D3NE qualifying toss of 117 feet in the javelin while junior Faye Gauthier (West Warwick, RI) was eighth in the hammer (152-2). The quartet of Pawlak, senior Michelle Gencorelli (Andover, MA), Nippert and freshman Janelle Knight (Santa Barbara, CA) handed in a 48.81 to finish fifth, ahead of UMass B (49.61).
The 800-meter run saw senior Katie Nugent (Huntington Station, NY) and sophomore Elizabeth Kirschner (South Hamilton, MA) place 10th (2:24.14) and 11th (2:26.26) for the Crimson and Gray. Junior Callie Schadt (Brewster, MA) was .13 off a Division III New England invite with a 4:50.13 in the 1,500-meter run.
Pawlak led the Engineers in the 100-meter dash (12.93) while Gencorelli did the same in the 200-meter dash (26.69) and junior Seneca Warren (New York, NY) in the 400-meter run (1:03.79). Senior Cole Godzinski (North Reading, MA) represented the program in the 100-meter hurdles (20.74). Junior Aleye Momodu (Milford, MA) sent the shot put 30-11 and senior Kristen Dettloff (Vernon, NJ) propelled the discus 91-6.
The Engineers head to the Conn. College Silfen Invitational & Multi-Event Meet this weekend, which begins with the Elite Distance and multis on Friday.
