New Haven, CT --- Senior Ryan Wittenberg (Bedford, NH) and the 4x100-meter relay consisting of sophomore Matt Adiletta (Bolton, MA), junior Nick Fleury (Hopkinton, NH), junior William Kopellas (Needham, MA) and senior Antoine Harris (Southington, CT) reset school records as the WPI men's track & field team tied for 20th at the All-New England All-Divisions Championships Friday and Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University.
The host Owls secured the team title with 112 points, just ahead of URI (109.5). WPI, Amherst and Franklin Pierce all totaled 13 points on the day.
Wittenberg placed fifth in a time of 1:51.62, which is unofficially 11th on the NCAA Division III performance list. The quartet handed in a season-best, and fourth-place, 41.54. The time is unofficially 20th on the national list, four spots shy of an invitation. The 4x800-meter relay comprised of freshman Owen Lally (Lebanon, CT), freshman Nate Meyer (Princeton, MA), sophomore Ben Steeves (Hollis, ME) and freshman Brian Brooks (Brewster, MA) took sixth with a season-best 7:46.54. Junior Alex Rus (Newton, MA) came home eighth in the 400-meter dash (49.19) after making the finals with a seventh-place 48.82 in the prelims.
Narrowly missing out on All-NEICAAA honors were Harris in the 200-meter dash (21.86), the 4x400-meter relay of Rus, Fleury, Wittenberg and Harris (3:19.76) and sophomore Johann Bradley (Slidell, LA) in the pole vault (14-11.50). Sophomore Logan Gaudette (Holden, MA) rounded out the top-10 performances with a 33:29.46 in the 10,000-meter run.
Kopellas also recorded a PR of 22-5.75 in the long jump while sophomore Malek Elshakhs (Storrs, CT) posted a personal-best 15.18 in the 110-meter hurdles and junior Quinton Schimmel (Monroe Township, NJ) raced to a PR of 55.84 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Adiletta also took part in the 200-meter dash and Brooks ran the 1,500-meter race. Also representing WPI were seniors Michael Brady (Medway, MA), Lucas Gagne (Franklin, NH) and Matt Rabasco (Pittsfield, MA) in the 5,000-meter run, discus and 10,000-meter run, respectively. Junior Fabian Gaziano (Wilbraham, MA) and freshman Anthony Algieri (Nutley, NJ) participated in the 110-meter hurdles.
Select student-athletes will be at Williams and/or MIT Last Chance Meets on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
