WPI President Dennis Berkey and members of the WPI Board of Trustees, along with the Moonraker 2.0 robot, broke ground today for a 145,000-square-foot sports and recreation center. The new center will be built into the hillside at the west end of the WPI Quadrangle and is designed to meet LEED certification standards. The facility is scheduled to open in August 2012.
Keene, NH --- Top seed and host Keene State advanced to the finals of the ECAC New England Division III Women's Basketball Tournament with a 56-49 victory over fourth seed and defending champion WPI in Saturday's first semifinal game. The contest marked the final game for WPI seniors Brittney McNally and Liz Tuite.
Worcester, MA --- For over three decades, WPI's Harrington Auditorium has been the proud host of the Central Mass Boys and Girls Basketball Semifinals and Championship games for Division I, II and III. 18 games in seven days will kick off on Sunday, February 28th and culminate with a single championship contest on Friday March 5th and five championship tilts on Saturday March 6th.
Worcester, MA --- Elle Fontaine and Theresa Logan combined for 45 points and 20 rebounds to help propel defending champion WPI to a 70-54 victory over visiting Norwich Wednesday evening in a ECAC Division III New England Women’s Basketball quarterfinal contest. WPI advances to the semifinals on Saturday when they will travel to top-seeded Keene State for a 1pm start.
Babson Park, MA --- Three key members of the WPI women’s basketball team have been named to the 2009-10 NEWMAC Women's Basketball All-Academic team. The Engineers had the third most student-athletes selected in the 10-team conference. The trio included Melissa Kuhn, a two-time winner, and sophomores Baillie McNally and Lauren Hannmann, who each earned the honor for the first time.
Babson Park, MA --- WPI’s Elle Fontaine and Melissa Kuhn distinguished themselves by being named to the NEWMAC all-conference women’s basketball team in voting by conference coaches announced on Tuesday. Fontaine earned first team honors while Kuhn was tabbed to the second team. Fontaine currently leads WPI is scoring (11.9 ppg), rebounding (6.9 rpg) and blocks (21) from the guard position.

Worcester, MA --- The WPI women’s basketball team used a sizzling start to both halves to defeat visiting Wheaton 58-44 in a key NEWMAC contest on Saturday afternoon. Melissa Kuhn had a solid all-around game tallying 13 points and a career-best seven steals to go along with three assists. With the win the Engineers earn the second seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will host Mount Holyoke on Wednesday in a Quarterfinal.
When Elle Fontaine was a fifth grader in Franklin, she couldn't have known how Kaitlyn O'Malley would play a part in her life. "Kaitlyn was in high school at the time," says Fontaine. Fast-forward a few years and after a starry career at Bishop Feehan High School, Fontaine looked at a number of colleges before settling on Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Why WPI? It had a lot to do with O'Malley, who was the assistant coach at the school, and recruited Fontaine.

Worcester, MA --- The WPI basketball teams will be taking part in their annual "Pink Zone" event during their home twinbill on Wednesday, February 17th. The men's team will be entertaining Springfield at 5:30pm while the women host MIT at 7:30pm. The Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness.
Wellesley, MA --- After building a 15-point second-half lead, WPI women's basketball held off a late surge from Wellesley for a 45-41 victory on Saturday afternoon at Keohane Sports Center. WPI now stands at 14-9 on the season, 11-5 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley falls to 8-13, 6-10 in the conference. WPI was led by Elle Fontaine who scored 14 points with eight boards and four steals.
South Hadley, MA --- The WPI womens basketball team used a dominant second half to secure a 56-44 triumph over NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke this evening at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. It was the Engineers fifth straight win over the Lyons and 150th at WPI for head coach Cherise Galasso. The Engineers were paced by Melissa Kuhn who posted 12 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists.

There is plenty of exciting WPI athletics action on tap for Saturday. Five teams have home contests on Saturday as crunch time approaches for the winter sport squads. Saturday marks the final home contests for Wrestling and Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving. All three teams face Bridgewater State with wrestling on campus at noon in Alumni Gym and the swim meet at Clark beginning at 1pm. If basketball is your game, Harrington Auditorium is the place to be. Men's Basketball gets things started at 1pm versus rival Wheaton while Women's Basketball faces NEWMAC unbeaten Babson at 3pm. At the doubleheader, the two programs will honor the memory of Mary Chatfield and welcome many children from Big Brothers-Big Sisters.
Springfield, MA --- Behind a complete team effort, the Springfield women's basketball team shut down rival WPI, 53-37, in a critical NEWMAC contest on Wednesday evening. For WPI, Elle Fontaine recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Melissa Kuhn added nine points, while Caitlin O'Connor chipped in with seven points.
Worcester, MA --- Freshman Theresa Logan poured in a career-best 19 points to lift host WPI past city rival Clark 70-49 in NEWMAC womens basketball action on Saturday afternoon. With their third straight win, the Engineers push their record to 13-6 on the season and 9-3 in the league. Clark is now 4-15 overall and 3-9 in NEWMAC play. WPI used a smothering defense to force 28 turnovers, including 17 in the first half.

Cambridge, MA --- In a back-and-forth battle that featured eight lead changes and seven ties, MIT tallied five consecutive points during the final 51 seconds of regulation to pull out a 47-43 win over WPI in women's basketball action on Wednesday. The visiting Engineers saw their ledger dip to 10-6 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Lauren Hannmann led all scorers with 12 points while Elle Fontaine notched eight points and seven rebounds.

Norton, MA --- Senior point guard Andrea Bailey banked in a 40-foot buzzer-beating heave during overtime to give the Wheaton women's basketball team a thrilling 64-63 victory over WPI on Saturday in NEWMAC play in Emerson Gymnasium. Bailey's heroics came after WPI's Melissa Kuhn hit a jumper with 1.5 seconds left to give the Engineers a 63-61 lead. The Crimson and Gray are now 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC.
