Worcester, MA --- Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) registered her first career double-double and the WPI defense limited MIT to 16.9% shooting from the floor as the homestanding Engineers notched a 61-28 victory in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, WPI improves to 5-14 overall and 3-9 in conference play. MIT slips to 8-10 on the season and 4-8 in the NEWMAC.
WPI never trailed in the contest. The hosts held MIT to 2-of-13 shooting en route to opening up a 11-4 lead over the first 10 minutes. Senior Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY) was key during the early spurt, tallying seven of WPI's first nine points. MIT connected on just 1-of-14 3-pointers during the opening stanza and did not get to the free throw line. The visitors did get a basket in the closing seconds of the half by Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, WA) to slice WPI's lead to 27-15 at the break.
Worcester's Engineers rattled off the first 12 points after intermission to secure the victory. The hosts continued with its stingy defense, forcing MIT to miss on its first 11 attempts of the second half. The guests struggle again from long range, connecting on just one of 12 3-point attempts to finish the game 2-of-26 from behind the arc and just 12-of-71 overall.
Davis totaled 11 points and gobbled up a career-best 10 rebounds for WPI. The freshman also doled out a game-high five assists. Theresa Logan (Southboro, MA) led all scorers with 14 points - draining 6-of-13 shots from the floor - while hauling in eight boards. Hannmann finished with nine points and Taryn Roy (Stafford Springs, CT) tossed in six as the Crimson and Gray enjoyed a 30-14 edge in points in the paint and a 21-6 advantage in bench points.
Sascha Burton paced MIT with seven points while Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, CA) chipped in with five. Michelle Battipaglia (Katonah Somers, NY) had a strong game for Cambridge's Engineers, grabbing a game-best 12 rebounds to go along with a pair of steals and two of MIT's three assists on the day.
WPI concludes a brief two-game home stand on Wednesday when they entertain Wheaton at 7:30pm. MIT is also at home on Wednesday, hosting Coast Guard at 7pm.
