  • 17 Winter Student-Athletes Earn NEWMAC All-Academic Honors
    March 13, 2013
    Wellesley, MA --- The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference announced its 2013 Academic All-Conference teams in late February. Between men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, WPI had 17 student-athletes fit the bill. Academic All-Conference Honorees must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2012 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and participated as a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
  • Logan to Represent Women's Basketball in the NEWBA Senior All-Star Team

    Northampton, MA --- Theresa Logan has been chosen to participate in the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) All-Senior contest. The game, which will be played at Western New England, is scheduled for Saturday, March 23rd at 1pm. The selection caps a busy few weeks on the awards circuit for Logan. The forward fought through injuries en route to earning her second straight All-NEWMAC nod.
  • Logan Repeats as Women's Basketball All-NEWMAC Honoree

    Babson Park, MA --- For the second straight year, WPI forward Theresa Logan has been named second team All-NEWMAC in voting announced by the conference’s women’s basketball coaches. The senior, who in her final game became the 16th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, gives the Engineers an all-league pick for the tenth straight season. Logan battled injuries to pace the Crimson and Gray in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and place second on the team with 9.4 points per game.

    Babson Park, MA --- Senior captain Sarah Collins led all players with 17 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots to propel the top-seeded Babson College Beavers to a 51-35 victory over fourth-seeded WPI in the semifinal round of the 2013 NEWMAC Women’s Basketball Tournament at Babson’s Staake Gymnasium. WPI (15-11) was led by senior Theresa Logan, who scored 11 points to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her career on Saturday.
  • Logan's Heroics Sent Women's Basketball to Eighth Straight NEWMAC Semifinal

    Worcester, MA --- Theresa Logan canned a 3-pointer with 1:18 remaining and the WPI defense forced two turnovers in the last minute and a missed jumper in the waning seconds as the fourth-seeded Engineers defeated visiting No. 5 seed Coast Guard 44-43 in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal contest on Wednesday evening. With the victory, WPI improves to 15-10 on the season and advances to its eighth straight NEWMAC semifinals where they will meet top seed, host and four-time defending tournament champion Babson on Saturday at at 1pm.
  • Women's Basketball Gives Galasso 200th WPI Victory and Home Tournament Game

    New London, CT --- WPI outscored host Coast Guard by 19 points in the second half to erase a nine point halftime deficit en route to posting a 59-49 victory in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference regular-season finale. The victory was the 200th of WPI head coach Cherise Galasso’s 13-season career. The same two teams will meet Wednesday in the NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinals in Worcester as WPI is the fourth seed and Coast Guard is the seeded fifth.
  • Regionally-Ranked Smith Downs Women's Basketball in Regular Season Home Finale

    Worcester, MA --- Rosa Drummond earned her third double-double of the year picking up 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead visiting Smith past WPI 76-55 in Wednesday night’s NEWMAC match-up in Harrington Auditorium. With the win, Smith, ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III New England rankings improves to 21-3 overall and 15-2 in conference and has secured the number two seed in next week’s NEWAMC Tournament. WPI drops to 13-10 on the year and 9-8 in NEWMAC action.
  • Women's Basketball to Host Annual "Play4Kay" Game on Wednesday

    The WPI Women's Basketball team will be hosting Smith College on Wednesday evening at 7pm in its annual "Play4Kay" game. Play4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone, is an initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Fans are encouraged to join the teams, event workers, pep band and cheerleaders in wearing pink to the game.
  • Wellesley Sinks Women's Basketball 52-51 in Overtime Thriller

    Worcester, MA --- Leslie Leong connected on Wellesley’s only 3-pointer of the game to forge a tie late in regulation and the Blue, who never led in the opening 40 minutes, held the advantage throughout overtime in a thrilling 52-51 victory over host WPI in a NEWMAC women’s basketball contest played on Sunday afternoon. Kelly Morgan tossed in a game-best 12 points for WPI, including canning 4-of-6 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.

  • Women's Basketball Defeats Mount Holyoke to Punch NEWMAC Tournament Ticket

    South Hadley, MA --- A total of six players reached double-figures in the contest, but it was the visiting Engineers that came out on top as WPI held off Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening. With the victory, WPI clinches a NEWMAC Tournament bid and moves to 13-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 5-15 and 3-12 in the NEWMAC. For the game, Dani Davis recorded a game-best 17 points with a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Logan, Morgan and Davis Spark Women's Basketball's Win Against Springfield

    Worcester, MA --- Theresa Logan collected her third double-double of the season and eighth of her career to lift WPI to a 57-42 victory over Springfield in a NEWMAC women’s basketball match-up on Saturday afternoon. WPI improves to 12-8 overall and is now 8-6 in league action. The Engineers sit alone in fourth place in the 10-team conference and have a three-game lead over the three teams that are tied for the sixth and final NEWMAC Tournament bid. Logan ended with 12 points and a season-best 14 rebounds.
  • Logan Named to Capital One Academic All-District I Women's Basketball First-Team

    Worcester, MA --- WPI women's basketball student-athlete Theresa Logan has been selected as a Capital One Division III Academic All-District I first-team honoree by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). The senior now advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration. Logan, a three-year starter for the Engineers, was a second team All-NEWMAC member in 2011-12.   • Women's Basketball Sees Comeback Fall Short at Wheaton

    Norton, MA --- The Wheaton women’s basketball team posted a 34-32 victory over WPI) in a NEWMAC matchup on Wednesday night in Emerson Gymnasium on Play 4Kay Cancer Awareness Night and National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). For WPI, senior forward Theresa Logan had six points, a game-high nine rebounds (three offensive), three blocks and one steal. Sophomore guard Rachel Pineda collected six points, three steals and two rebounds.

    Cambridge, MA --- On the strength of an 11-of-12 performance from the free throw line, the WPI women’s basketball team edged out MIT, 37-34, in a NEWMAC game on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Michelle Battipaglia tallied seven points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block for MIT (7-11, 3-9 NEWMAC) while junior Siena Mamayek registered seven points and six rebounds for WPI (11-7, 7-5 NEWMAC).

    When WPI junior Kelly Morgan’s younger brother, Glen Morgan, enrolled at the school last fall, one of the first pieces of advice she gave him was to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Mass./Metrowest. Kelly, a guard on the women’s basketball team, has been a Big Sister for three years to Monique, a sixth-grader at Elm Park Community School in Worcester, and the relationship has been an enriching experience for both.

    Worcester, MA --- Senior Sarah Collins posted her 15th double-double of the season to pace nationally-ranked Babson by host WPI 65-45 in a NEWMAC women’s basketball contest played in Harrington Auditorium on Wednesday evening. Cindy Chelius led the WPI charge with team-bests of nine points and seven rebounds. Theresa Logan tossed in eight points while Siena Mamayek and Dani Davis chipped in with six and five points respectively. WPI heads to Cambridge on Saturday to take on MIT at 2pm.

    Worcester, MA --- Visiting WPI raced out to a 24-8 lead midway through the first half and never looked back, cruising to an easy 59-39 win over crosstown rival Clark in NEWMAC women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, WPI pushes its record to 10-6 overall and 6-4 in league play, while the Cougars have now dropped four of five contests to slip to 9-8 and 4-6 in conference action.

    Northampton, MA --- Smith College scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back in a 63-39 NEWMAC win over WPI on Wednesday night.Smith, which has not lost at home this season, is now 13-2, and 8-1 in the NEWMAC, while WPI is 9-6, and 5-4 against NEWMAC opposition. Rosa Drummond led all players with 17 points, while adding nine rebounds. Paulina Solis added 15 points, seven boards, and four assists, and Sydney Parkmond chipped in 12. Cindy Chelius led WPI with eight points.

    Wellesley, MA --- The Wellesley College women’s basketball team held visiting WPI to its lowest offensive output of the season, handing the Engineers a 56-38 loss in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The win evens the Blue’s season record to 6-6, with a 5-3 record in the NEWMAC. WPI fell to 9-5 overall, 5-3 in the NEWMAC with the loss. Sophomore Dani Davis paced WPI with 11 points while senior Cindy Chelius recorded nine and Kelly Morgan added eight.

WPI is now 8-4 overall and moves to 4-2 in conference action while Clark dips to 7-4 on the season and 3-3 in NEWMAC play.

Logan posted a team-best 18 points while Chelius tossed in a season-high 10. The duo corralled six and seven rebounds respectively.     Worcester, MA --- Tournament MVP Jen Ashton tallied ten points, eight assists and eight steals to catapult Westfield State past host WPI 62-51 at the WPI Women’s Basketball Holiday Classic Monday afternoon. The Owls are 8-4 on the season while WPI, who saw its three-game winning streak end, is now 6-4. Crimson and Gray senior co-captain drained two buckets and went 2-of-2 from the free throw line en route to earning All-Tournament team accolades.

The win is a season-high third straight for the Engineers, who improve to 6-3 while Trinity dips to 5-4. After never leading in the opening stanza, the Engineers never trailed in the second half.

The Hollis Brookline High School graduate is an engineering management major, with minors in biomedical and industrial engineering. But as busy as she is building a career, including an internship with an engineering firm last summer in Londonderry, she finds time to work on her game.The work is paying off.

After a slow start to the game, the Engineers battled their way to a 72-45 victory. The records for the AMCATS and the Engineers are now 3-7 and 5-3, respectively. WPI’s scoring and rebounding highs belonged to senior forward Theresa Logan’s with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Rachel Pineda, a sophomore guard, led the Engineers with three assists.
