The Engineers will face the host Lady Royals in a double header on Friday. The other game features Marymount (VA) and Cabrini with the advancing teams meeting on Saturday.

    WORCESTER — Bill Gibbons Sr. was a freshman at Clark when athletic director Russ Granger asked him if he would like to help out with the Clark Tournament, the area’s eminent high school boys’ basketball tourney that was then in its 15th year. Gibbons’ first tasks included bringing oranges and towels to the players’ lockers in old Alumni Gym at halftime and after the games.

    When Chris Bartley took over the WPI men’s program in 2001, the Engineers had lost 27 straight games. Make that 28 when the Engineers fell in Bartley’s WPI debut at Framingham State. A few days later, WPI beat Curry and Richie Burns and Bob Tupper, best friends and longtime co-workers in WPI’s facilities department, were among the “six or seven fans,” as Bartley remembers it, inside Harrington Auditorium to witness it.

The Lyons up their overall record to 17-7 on the season and 10-5 in conference play while the Engineers dip to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in NEWMAC action.

The guard now advances to the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.

With the victory, the Engineers move to 17-1 and remain perfect in conference play at 9-0. The Lyons slip to 0-18 overall and 0-10 in the NEWMAC.

    New London, CT ---Senior Lisa Mendez spearheaded a 10-0 second half run as WPI remained unbeaten in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play and won its 13th traight beating Coast Guard 58-45. Mendez had back-to-back old fashion 3-point plays in the final 45 seconds of the third quarter turning a 31-29 deficit into a 35-31 lead after three.
  • Bench Catapults Women's Basketball Past Smith for 12th Consecutive Triumph

    WORCESTER – WPI’s bench outscored Smith 29-7 en route to a 65-48 victory Thursday night in a NEWMAC women’s basketball contest in Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers (14-1, 6-0 NEWMAC) have now won 12 consecutive games to tie the 1995-96 team for the second longest winning streak in program history while the Pioneers slip to 5-8 on the season and 2-4 in league play.
