Norton, MA --- Wheaton canned all six of its free throws in the final 1:37 to finish the game on a 6-0 run and defeat visiting WPI 64-60 in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest played on Saturday afternoon. The Lyons up their overall record to 17-7 on the season and 10-5 in conference play while the Engineers dip to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in NEWMAC action.
In a game that featured eight lead changes and seven ties, Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) gave the Crimson and Gray a 60-58 advantage with 1:55 to go. The hosts then saw Kiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, NY) even the game with a pair of freebies with 1:37 to go before drawing a charge on WPI's next possession. Alyssa Almario (West Orange, NJ) converted a two free throws on Wheaton's next possession and then the Lyons forced a missed 3-pointer and grabbed the rebounds. Jill Bodreau (Quinebaug, CT) put the game out of reach by draining two free throws with 17.5 remaining to put the game out of reach.
WPI had burst ahead 18-9 after a quarter only to see Wheaton surge ahead at the break 31-27 courtesy a 22-9 scoring edge in the second quarter. The Crimson and Gray actually had five more field goal in the loss (25-20) but the Lyons converted 16-of-20 attempts from the lines while the guest could only must 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Biney paced all players with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers. Priscilla Dunphy (Barrington, RI) had a strong all-around game for Engineers, registering 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT) came off the bench to score 11 points, swipe five steals, dole out four assists and corral three rebounds. Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) and Yasmeen Luna (North Providence, RI) chipped in with nine and eight points respectively.
Almario recorded 15 points for Wheaton while Shoemaker fell a rebounds short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds to go along with five assists and a block. Rebecca Arnone (Litchfield, NH) also reached double figures with 11 points while Oppie Morris (Ware, MA) stuffed the stat sheets with seven points, six points and six assists.
Both teams are back in action with home NEWMAC contests with Wednesday. WPI hosts Coast Guard at 5:30pm while Wheaton entertains Babson at 7pm.
