WORCESTER – Emerson sophomore Sam Boyle (Scotts Valley, CA) led all players with 13 points and junior Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, PA) notched 11 points and eight rebounds in a 64-37 NEWMAC women's basketball victory over host WPI Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.
The Lions improve to 5-2 on the year and are now 2-0 in conference play for the second time since joining the NEWMAC in 2013-14. WPI slips to 4-3 and 0-2.
The game featured two lead changes and a tie with 3:56 left in the first. Sophomore Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) evened it early before freshman Victoria Mirecki (Rock Tavern, NY) 3-pointer gave the Engineers the 5-4 advantage. Emerson quickly responded, taking the lead for good following a jumper by Clydesdale.
Over the course of next 9:18, the Lions built a 14-point lead that featured a 7-0 run with four from sophomore Rachel Davey (Saratoga, CA) and a triple by senior Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England). The Engineers cut the margin to a dozen twice before a late 3-pointer by Freshman McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) sent the teams to the cloakroom separated by 11 (31-20).
Emerson continued to pull away after the break with a 20-8 third quarter fueled by seven by senior Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, CA). A 7-0 outburst by the Engineers concluded with a free throw by freshman Jordan Wynn (Groton, MA) to get the hosts within 18 with under 4:37 to play.
Junior Quinn Madden (Mokena, IL) and Busch (6 rebounds) each added eight points for the Lions. Junior Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, CA) and sophomore Ashley Toner (Barnegat, NJ) handed out three assists apiece.
WPI junior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) amassed 10 points and eight rebounds while Mirecki finished with six points and five boards. Blake also netted six for the Crimson and Gray. All three of Wynn's caroms came off the offensive glass.
For the game, the Boynton Hillers bench scored five more than the Lions (22-17), who committed nine less turnovers and benefitted 27-11 in points off turnovers.
The Engineers trek to MIT Wednesday in a 7pm rematch of last year's NEWMAC final and Emerson is at Wellesley at the same time.
