WORCESTER – Freshman Bailey Savage (Charlton, MA) established a new career-high, and shared game-high honors with sophomore Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH), of 15 points as WPI defeated Clark, 62-44, in a NEWMAC women's basketball matchup Saturday afternoon inside Harrington Auditorium.
With the triumph, the Engineers (5-4, 1-3 NEWMAC) get back in the win column and secure their first conference victory of the season while the Cougars slip to 3-6 and 0-3.
Savage tied her previous standard with 11 at the half while Blake was a rebound shy of a double-double. Sophomore Caitlin Boermeester (Billerica, MA) also equaled a career-best before the break and went on to finish with five assists on the day. Junior Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) once again guided the Crimson and Gray bench with her second double-double of the season, this time with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocks. Freshman McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) chipped in with nine points. Senior Alyssa Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) and Blake each accounted for three steals.
Sophomore Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, MA) hauled in a game-best 14 rebounds and scored a team-high 11 points for Clark to go with three steals. Seniors Sam O'Gara (Worcester, MA) and Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, RI) each chipped with six points. Ezemma also notched seven rebounds while freshman Julia Beebe (Andover, CT) turned in five points and six boards. Freshman Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, MA) contributed three steals for the guests.
After Vinson made it a 3-point game with 5:05 left in the first, WPI went on to claim an eight-point advantage with just over a minute left. Moments later, O'Gara cut the deficit to six. The Engineers then won the second by a count of 19-9 while the second half saw the hosts win each frame by a point for the 62-44 final.
The Engineers maintained slim margins in many categories while the Cougars scored 23 of the 34 points off turnovers.
