• Wrestling's Howe Named NWCA Division III Scholar All-American

    Worcester, MA --- Tyler Howe was tabbed as a Division III Scholar All-American last week by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Howe garners his second award in as many years. WPI finished fourth as a team out of 14 behind Wesleyan, Johnson & Wales and Williams under first-year head coach Steve Hall.

    Worcester, MA --- Four different WPI wrestlers officially earned All-New England honors on Sunday as the Engineers wrapped up the two-day New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships hosted by Trinity. Senior David Cardenas placed fourth at 184 pounds while Tyler Howe, Mike Perruccio finished fifth at 157 and 133 and Alex Freilich sixth at 174. The Engineers were 11th as a team with 39 points, just three points out of 10th place.

    Hartford, CT --- Tyler Howe, Mike Perruccio, Alex Freilich and David Cardenas all assured themselves of All-New England accolades to highlight WPI Wrestling’s performance on day one of the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships hosted by Trinity on Saturday. The four All-New England athletes are the most the Engineers have had since 2005.

    Women's Swimming and Diving's Sarah Dinwoodie and Wrestling's Mike Perruccio have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Perruccio went 2-0 last week as the Crimson and Gray picked up a pair of team wins to end the regular season. Dinwoodie set two individual records and helped three relay teams achieve new WPI standards as the team finished seventh at the NEWMAC Championships.

    Worcester, MA --- Seniors Anthony Corbo, Tyler Howe and David Cardenas all tallied victories in their final home match to spark WPI to a 27-16 win over Norwich in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match on Thursday evening. The Engineers have won two straight contests to close out the dual meet season with a 3-12 mark while Norwich slips to 2-12 overall.

    New London, CT --- Led by pins from heavyweight Anthony Corbo and Stephen Poppa at 141 pounds, the WPI wrestling team defeated archrival Coast Guard 33-15 on Monday evening in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match. With the win, the Engineers improve their record to 2-12 on the season while Coast Guard dips to 1-17 overall.

    Bristol, RI --- After falling behind 9-0 after the first two bouts, the Roger Williams Wrestling team rallied for eight straight wins and the 34-9 victory over visiting WPI, Wednesday, in the Campus Recreation Center main gymnasium. WPI freshmen Brian Jennings posted a 7-1 win at 125 and Mike Perruccio pinned his opponent at 133 to give the Engineers the early 9-0 lead.

    Bridgewater, MA --- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team posted a 37-11 victory over New England Wrestling Association foe (NEWA) WPI on Senior Day at Kelly Gymnasium in Bridgewater. With the dual meet victory, Bridgewater improves to 8-8-1 on the season while WPI slips to 1-11.
  • Wrestling Comes Up Just Short in Tri-Meet at Southern Maine

    Gorham, ME --- The WPI wrestling team went on the road Sunday afternoon and lost a pair of tight matches to New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) foes despite two victories by senior captain Tyler Howe. The Engineers fell 22-21 to host Southern Maine in the opener before dropping a 28-16 decision to Plymouth State. PSU concluded the afternoon by knocking off the Huskies 30-24 in the finale.

    Bristol, RI --- WPI freshman wrester Alex Freilich has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week. The 174-pounder is the first Engineer grappler to be honored with a weekly award from the conference since Richie Wingert took home Rookie of the Week honors on January 12th, 2009.
  • Wrestling Registers Historic Victory at NEWA Dual Meet Championship

    Bridgewater, MA --- The WPI wrestling team rallied for five wins in the last six bouts to defeat Western New England 29-16 Sunday afternoon at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships and in the process earned the program’s 500th all-time victory. The win was the first collegiate coaching triumph for head coach Steve Hall and helped the Engineers finish 13th at the event hosted by Bridgewater State.

    Worcester, MA --- Adam Lynch and Brendan Guarino each registered pins to help lift visiting Rhode Island College to a 31-12 victory over WPI in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) matchup on Wednesday evening. With the result, the Anchormen level their record at 4-4 while the Engineers slip to 0-6 on the season. WPI received wins from David Cardenas, Tyler Howe and Alex Freilich.

    Springfield, MA --- WPI won three of eight contested matches Saturday afternoon in a 33-10 road defeat at Western New England. The day got off to a great start for the Crimson and Gray as Anthony Corbo opened the match with a 8-2 victory at heavyweight before Mike Perruccio posted a 12-3 major decision victory two bouts later at 133.

    Oneonta, NY --- Senior Tyler Howe won all three of his matches as the WPI wrestling team participated Saturday at the Oneonta State quad meet in upstate New York. Tom Lacroix and Anthony Corbo each added a pair of wins for the Engineers, who fell to the host Red Dragons (26-15) and came up on the short end of decisions to New England powers Johnson & Wales (32-6) and Williams (33-9).
  • Wrestling Blanked by No.1 Ranked Springfield in Dual Meet Opener

    Springfield, MA --- The WPI wrestling opened its 2010-2011 dual meet season with a trip to top-ranked Springfield on Wednesday evening. The Pride, who are the only program to have 10 wrestlers ranked in the NEWA rankings, shutout out the Engineers by a 48-0 score. WPI is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Oneonta State for a tri-match with Johnson and Wales and Williams.

    Gorham, ME --- Tyler Howe, Stephen Poppa and David Cardenas all earned All-Tournament accolades to highlight WPI’s sixth place showing Saturday at the Ted Reese Wrestling Invitational hosted by Southern Maine. It marked the final traditional weight-class tournament for the Engineers before February’s NEWA Championships.

    Oneonta NY --- Freshman Brian Jennings placed third at 125 pounds Saturday to pace WPI's ninth-place showing at the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by Oneonta State. Joining the freshman on the All-Tournament podium was senior Tyler Howe at 157 pounds and classmate Anthony Corbo at 285.

    Bristol, RI --- The WPI wrestling team opened the 2010-11 season on Saturday with an eighth place showing at the Roger Williams Invitational. Tyler Howe headlined the Engineer effort with a second place finish at 157 pounds. The event, won by Messiah (PA), marked the head coaching debut of WPI Hall of Famer Steve Hall.

  • Wrestling Reunion Reception to be Held on Saturday, October 2nd

    The WPI Wrestling Family will be hosting a reunion on Saturday, October 2nd as part of Homecoming Weekend. The event, which will honor all four New England championship teams, will occur on the year of the 25th anniversary of the first championship won in 1985. The reunion, which follows the annual Homecoming tailgate, is from 5 to 8pm in Alumni Gym.
