    Wrestling's Alex Freilich and Women's Basketball's Baillie McNally were named WPI Athletes of the Week. Freilich posted three victories on Saturday en route to a third place finish at the NEWA Championship. McNally was instrumental in helping the Engineers down Clark on Wednesday evening in the NEWMAC tournament by sinking eight free throws in the final 1:06 of play.

    Middletown, CT --- Four WPI wrestlers competed Sunday at the NEWA Championships at Wesleyan and in the process earned All-New England honors for the Engineers. Alex Freilich was third at 174 pounds, Tyler Tilbe placed fourth at 133, Mike Perruccio finished fifth at 141 and Zach Hartzell turning in a sixth place showing at 165. As a team, WPI tallied 43 points to place 11th, just a half point behind tenth-place Southern Maine and a single point back of ninth place Williams.

    Middletown, CT --- WPI sophomore Alex Freilich reached the winner’s bracket finals and classmate Mike Perruccio and freshman Tyler Tilbe and Zach Hartzell all battled back through the loser’s bracket to assure themselves of at least All-New England honors at day one of the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships hosted by Wesleyan. The Engineers currently sit in 10th place with 37.5 points, just two points behind ninth place Southern Maine
  • Wrestling Heads to Wesleyan for the 2012 New England Championships

    Worcester, MA --- The WPI wrestling program heads to Middletown, CT this weekend for the 2012 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships. A season ago the four All-New England performers and 11th place team showing were the best for the Engineers in both categories since 2005. Sunday will feature former wrestling great and past head coach Lance Baden being inducted into the NEWA Hall of Fame and AD Dana Harmon being honored as the NEWA Administrator of the Year.
  • Wrestling Ends Dual Meet Portion of Schedule with Loss at Norwich

    Northfield, VT --- The WPI wrestling team closed out its 2011-12 dual meet schedule with a 31-12 road loss at Norwich on Saturday afternoon. WPI received a pin by Mike Perruccio at 141 pounds and decisions from Tom Lacroix and Alex Freilich at 165 and 174 respectively to account for its scoring on the day. The Engineers wrap up its dual meet season with a 4-12 mark and now turn their attention to the New England Wrestling Association Championships.
  • Freilich, Szerszunowicz and Tilbe Notch Pins for Wrestling in loss to Roger Williams

    Worcester, MA --- Brandon Shenan and Shane Parcel registered early pins to lift Roger Williams to a 30-18 road victory over WPI in a New England Wrestling Association meeting on Wednesday evening. The Engineers tallied three pins on the night including Alex Freilich at 174 pounds, Joseph Szerszunowicz at heavyweight and Tyler Tilbe at 133. Prior to the match, lone WPI senior Stephen Poppa was honored before his final bout at historic Alumni Gym.
  • Hartzell and Perruccio Post Victories for Wrestling in Dual Meet versus Bridgewater State

    Worcester, MA --- Ryan Cassidy and Sean Fields earned key one-point decisions and Patrick Walsh and Jonathan Murray posted pins late in the match to propel visiting Bridgewater to a 35-9 win against WPI Saturday evening in a New England Wrestling Association matchup. The Bears move to 6-14 on the season while WPI slips to 4-10. The Engineers received a win by decision by Mike Perruccio at 141 pounds and a pin from Zach Hartzell at 165.
  • Freilich and Szerszunowicz Win Twice as Wrestling Splits a Home Tri-Meet

    Worcester, MA --- Alex Freilich continued his strong run in 2012 with a pair of victories in WPI’s home tri-match Saturday with Southern Maine and Plymouth State. Freilich recorded first period pins in a 34-13 victory over Plymouth State and a 30-15 loss to Southern Maine. The Huskies of USM went 2-0 on the day by beating Plymouth State 40-9 in the first match of the day. The junior, ranked second at 174 pounds in the latest New England rankings, improved to 12-3 on the season and remained undefeated in 2012.
  • Scheduled Announced for Saturday's Tri-Meet with Southern Maine and Plymouth State

    Worcester, MA --- WPI Wrestling will host a tri-meet with Southern Maine and Plymouth State on Saturday at historic Alumni Gym. The meet begins at noon when the Huskies of Southern Maine takes on the Panthers of Plymouth State. Host WPI sees its first action in the middle match (around a 2pm start) versus Plymouth State and wraps up the day against Southern Maine (approximately at 4pm).
  • Freilich and Tilbe Shine for Wrestling at NEWA Dual Meet Championships

    Springfield, MA --- Alex Freilich and Tyler Tilbe combined to go 7-0 to headline WPI’s showing at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships host by Springfield on Sunday. As a team, the Engineers went 1-3 on the day, falling in the opener to Southern Maine (35-6) and defeating Norwich (23-21) before being defeated by Trinity (30-15) and Plymouth State (22-21 on criteria).

    Wrestling's Alex Freilich and Women's Track and Field's Noelle Richard have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Freilich went 3-0 on the week highlighted by a 10-0 major decision against Western New England. Richard raced to a 59.38 in the 400-meter dash at Bowdoin which is currently the third-best time among Division III competitors.
  • Wrestling Splits a Pair of Matches at Coast Guard with Western New England

    New London, CT --- The WPI wrestling team split a pair of tightly-contested contests on Saturday afternoon at a tri-meet hosted by Coast Guard. The Engineers defeated Western New England 25-18 before falling 24-18 to the host Bears. Western New England opened the day by defeating Coast Guard 24-21. Tyler Tilbe, Austin Brais and Stephen Poppa all collected pins in the Crimson and Gray's victory over Western New England
  • Wrestling to Host Alumni Event at Part of 50th Anniversary Season on February 4th.

    Worcester, MA --- WPI wrestling coach Steve Hall announced recently an alumni event scheduled for Saturday, February 4th. The festivities will help celebrate the 50th anniversary of wrestling as a varsity sport at WPI and highlight all memories of historic Alumni Gym. The event begins with WPI hosting NEWA rival Bridgewater State at 5pm followed by an Alumni event at the Goat's Head Pub on campus..   • Wrestling Opens 2012 Schedule with Loss at Rhode Island College

    Providence, RI- Sophomore Alex Freilich recorded a pin at 174 pounds to highlight WPI's 31-12 loss to Rhode Island College at The Murray Center on Wednesday night in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) action. Other winners for WPI included decisions for freshman Andrew Tanner at 149 pounds and sophomore Mike Perruccio at 141 pounds. WPI is back in action Saturday with a tri-match at Coast Guard with Western New England.
  • Tanner Joins NEWA Rankings to give Engineers Five Ranked Wrestlers

    Freshman Andrew Tanner cracked the New England Wrestling Assocation's (NEWA) individual regional rankings, giving WPI five ranked wrestlers for the first time this season. Tanner was ranked eighth in the 149-pound weight class. The four other ranked wreslters remained at the same spot from the last ranking in mid-December. They include Alex Freilich - fourth at 174 pounds, Tyler Tilbe - fifth at 133 pounds, Zach Hartzell - fifth at 157 pounds and Mike Perruccio - eighth at 141 pounds.

    Four WPI wrestlers are ranked in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) individual rankings: Alex Freilich of Worcester/St. John’s, fourth, 174 pounds; Tyler Tilbe, fifth, 133; Zach Hartzell, fifth, 157; and Mike Perruccio, eighth, 141. It marks the first time under second year head coach Steve Hall that the Engineers have placed four wrestlers in the New England rankings.

    Williamstown, MA --- Sophomore Mike Perruccioe arned a 3-2 decision in a winner-take-all bout at 141 pounds to help WPI post a exciting 23-18 victory over host Williams in a quad match on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers wrapped up competition at the highly competitive quad with a 38-3 loss to Johnson & Wales, the top ranked team in New England, and a 24-15 defeat to New York power Oneonta State.
  • Wrestling Opens Dual-Meet Season with Loss to Regional Power Springfield

    Worcester, MA --- Freshman Tyler Tilbe and Teddy Kostopoulos each picked up wins for WPI as the Engineers opened the dual meet season with a 40-6 loss to second-ranked Springfield on Wednesday evening. The match was the home opener of the 50th anniversary season of WPI Wrestling and saw the Crimson and Gray christen a new wrestling mat. WPI is back on the mat on Saturday in a quad match at Williams that includes Johnson & Wales and Oneonta State.

    Women's Swimming and Diving's Sonja Kent and Alana Aubin along with Wrestling's Zach Hartzell have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Kent and Aubin were on the record-breaking 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relay teams while each set three individual standards for the Crimson and Gray at the Wesleyan Invitational. Hartzell claimed an individual title at the Ted Reese Invitational in the 157-pound weight class which included a win over a regionally ranked opponent.
  • Hartzell Tabbed NEWA Rookie of the Week

    Worcester, MA - WPI freshman wrestler Zach Hartzell has been named New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 4th. Hartzell won all three of his matches on Saturday en route to winning the 157-pound weight class at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine. He began with a pin of his quarterfinal opponent from NYU before defeating a pair of New England-ranked wrestlers including a 14-5 major decision over the fifth-ranked New England wrestler from Plymouth State.
  • Hartzell Strikes Gold for Wrestling at Ted Reese Invitational

    Gorham, ME --- Freshman Zach Hartzell captured the championship in the 157-pound class to highlight the WPI wrestling team’s performance at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine on Saturday. Hartzell’s title was the first individual crown won by an Engineer since Carl Anderson was victorious at the 2009 Red Dragon Invitational and helped spearhead a Crimson and Gray effort that resulted in a fifth place team showing. WPI totaled 60 points in the meet that was won by Trinity.
  • Wrestling Performs Well at the Red Dragon Invitational at Oneonta State

    Oneonta, NY --- Brian Jennings, Mike Perruccio, Scott Carpenter and Joseph Szerszunowicz all reached the quarterfinals Saturday as the WPI wrestling team participated in the Red Dragon Invitational at Oneonta State. The Engineers tallied 24 points at the event won by Cortland State. WPI wraps up the early season tournament portion of its schedule on Saturday, December 3rd with a trip to Gorham, Maine to participate in the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by Southern Maine.
  • Wrestling Begins Golden Anniversary Season at Roger Williams Invitational

    Bristol, RI --- The WPI Wrestling team kicked off its 50th season on Saturday by competing in the Roger Williams Invitational. The Engineers amassed 34 total points while Stevens took home the title at the 11-team event. Tyler Tilbe posted the most wins for the Crimson and Gray winning four matches Saturday. The freshman notched two pins at 133 pounds to go along with a pair of 8-3 wins by decision.

    The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce its 29th Class, the Class of 2011. The seven newest members were inducted on Friday, September 23, 2011 as part of Homecoming Weekend. They include: John Maxouris (’76), Miguel Concepcion (’05), Matt Wassell (’95), Matthew Musiak (’04), Kim (Cloutier) Villa (’90), Jeffrey Horowitz (’85) and Michele (Giard) Hanly (’82)
