  • Hartzell Competes at NCAA Wrestling Championships; Joins Tilbe as a Scholar All-American

    Cedar Rapids, IA --- Zach Hartzell became the first WPI wrestler to compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships since 2004 on Friday, wrestling at the event hosted by Cornell (IA) at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The junior 174-pounder dropped his two matches at the event to finish his outstanding season with a 16-9 record. Earlier in the day, Hartzell and 141-pound teammate Tyler Tilbe were named Scholar All-Americans by the Division III National Wrestling Coaches Association.
  • Wrestling's Hartzell Battles Way to NCAA National Championships

    Worcester, MA --- Zach Hartzell became the first WPI wrestler in nearly a decade to qualify for the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships when he won three matches Sunday to fight through the consolation bracket and finish third at the Northeast Regional hosted by the Engineers. The sophomore now advances to the national meet in two weeks which will be hosted by Cornell (IA) at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The 174 pounder became the first WPI wrestler to qualify for the national since Joe Moskowitz.
  • SUNY Cortland Headlines NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships

    Worcester, MA --- SUNY Cortland captured championships in four of the 10 weight classes as competition wrapped up Sunday in the two-day NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships at WPI. The event featured 18 schools with the top three wrestlers in each class qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships in two weeks hosted by Cornell (IA) at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The Red Dragons and Springfield both will send a region-best six competitors to Iowa.
  • Top Seeds Shine on First Day of 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Wrestling Regionals

    Worcester, MA --- Third-ranked SUNY Cortland placed seven wrestlers into the championship semifinals on the opening day of competition at the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Wrestling Regionals hosted by WPI. The Red Dragons also have the most participants still alive in the tournament with nine. Ithaca, Springfield and Wesleyan all have five grapplers in the championship semifinals while Johnson & Wales, Williams and Western New England all advanced a trio of wrestlers to the winner’s bracket semifinals
  • Tilbe and Hartzell Advance to Second Day of NCAA Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships

    Worcester, MA --- Tyler Tilbe and Zach Hartzell of host WPI each won two matches Saturday to advance to the final day of the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships. The duo will each have to win two matches Sunday morning in order to reach the third-place bout, where a victory there on Sunday afternoon would send the winner to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Action become Sunday in the Sports & Recreation at 10am.
  • Hartzell Dazzles as Wrestling Duals with Nationally-Ranked Springfield

    Springfield, MA --- WPI took four of the nine contested bouts Wednesday evening at nationally-ranked Springfield but fell 26-13 to the Pride. The Crimson and Gray close out the dual meet position of their schedule with a 8-12 mark while Springfield, ranked No.10 in Division III and No.1 in New England, is 14-2. Zach Hartzell made his return to the mat at 174 pounds a successful one, posting a 10-0 major decision over New England’s second ranked wrestler in that class.
  • WPI to Host 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships

    Worcester Polytechnic Institute is proud to host the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships. The 18-team tournament will take place on Saturday March 2nd and Sunday March 3rd at the Sports & Recreation Center on the campus of WPI. Action begins at 11am on Saturday and 10am on Sunday with the championship and third place bouts scheduled for 2:30pm on Sunday.
  • Freilich Takes Home New England Wrestling Association Wrestler of Week Honors

    Middletown, CT --- WPI junior Alex Freilich has been selected New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 18th. It marks the first weekly award this season for the Crimson and Gray and is the second time Freilich was been honored by the conference as he garnered Rookie of the Week honors in January of 2011.
  • Freilich Stars for Wrestling at Roger Williams Quad

    Bristol, RI --- Junior Alex Freilich won all three of his bouts as the WPI wrestling ventured to Roger Williams on Saturday for a quad match with Brockport State, Western New England and the host Hawks. The Engineers (8-11) fell to Roger Williams 35-13 in the opener, dropped a 34-6 decision to Brockport State in the middle match and fell to Western New England 27-18 in the finale
  • Wrestling Set to Honor Grebinar With Mat Dedication Wednesday Night
    February 13, 2013
    The WPI wrestling team will dedicate a new mat in honor of former coach Phil Grebinar before tonight’s home match against archrival Coast Guard at the Sports and Recreation Center. Grebinar coached the Engineers for 33 years and is a member of four halls of fame, including WPI’s. The face, heart and soul of WPI wrestling, he won 414 matches during his career, coached 195 All-New England wrestlers and captured four team championships.
  • Wrestling Closes Home Dual Meet Schedule with Shutout of Rival Coast Guard
    February 13, 2013
    Worcester, MA --- Alex Freilich and Justin Marsh each collected pins as WPI won all seven of the contested matches in a 42-0 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) shutout of Coast Guard on Wednesday evening. With the win, WPI evens its overall record at 8-8 and remains undefeated (4-0) in matches in the new Sports & Recreation Center. Coast Guard slips to 4-10 on the season.

    Worcester, MA --- The forecasted New England blizzard has resulted in schedule changes to the WPI Athletics calendar. Here is the latest update as of 4pm on Thursday. Track and Field - The BU Valentine Invitational, scheduled for Friday, February 8th and Saturday, February 9th has been cancelled; Men’s Basketball - at Springfield - Postponed to Sunday, February 10th at 2pm; Women’s Basketball - vs. Wellesley - Postponed to Sunday, February 10th now at 3pm; Wrestling - at Bridgewater State - 2pm - Off
  • Tilbe, Marsh and Perruccio Win Twice as Wrestling Splits at Plymouth State
    February 03, 2013
    Plymouth, NH --- Tyler Tilbe and Justin Marsh both collected a pair of pins and Mike Perruccio also registered a pair of victories as WPI split a pair of wrestling matches Sunday at the Plymouth State tri-match with Southern Maine. The Engineers closed the day with a 34-11 win over the host Panthers after opening the morning with a 24-18 loss to the Huskies. WPI, who was without the services of five of its top nine win producers due to injury, including three ranked New England wrestlers, is now 7-8 on the season.
  • Wrestling Posts Best Showing at NEWA Dual-Meet Championships in Nearly a Decade

    Providence, RI --- The WPI wrestling team registered its best finish at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual-Meet Championships since 2004 on Sunday, placing sixth in the 14-team event hosted by Johnson & Wales. The Crimson and Gray went 2-2 on the day, including victories over Western New England (25-24) and arch-rival Coast Guard (25-18). Justin Marsh was WPI's All-Tournament section. The freshman was 2-1 on the day with a pair of pins.
  • Perruccio Keys Run That Helps Wrestling Defeat Trinity at Wesleyan Quad
    January 19, 2013
    Middletown, CT --- Co-captain Mike Perruccio began a run of five straight WPI bout victories as the Engineers defeated Trinity 31-18 in a wrestling quad meet at Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson and Gray then scored big in the next four bouts with Andrew Tanner posting a fall at 51 seconds, Justin Marsh scoring a 13-5 major decision and Zach Hartzell and Alex Freilich each notching second period pins.
  • Tilbe and Marsh Register Second Place Showing as Wrestling Finishes Fourth at Ursinus
    January 12, 2013
    Collegeville, PA --- Tyler Tilbe and Justin Marsh both reached the finals of their respective weight classes as the WPI wrestling team placed fourth Saturday at the Will Abele Invitational hosted by Ursinus. The Engineers tallied 70.5 points on the day, trailing only Oneonta State, Ursinus and Navy Prep at the 13-team event. Tible rattled off three straight wins by decision at 149 pounds while Marsh rolled to the finals at 165.
  • Keystone Connection Helps Wrestling Defeat Rhode Island College 30-18

    Worcester, MA --- Pennsylvania natives Justin Marsh and Zach Hartzell each posted first period pins to propel WPI to a 30-18 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) victory over visiting Rhode Island College on Wednesday evening. The Engineers then rattled off six straight wins to grab the victory. WPI, ranked ninth in the latest NEWA Top 10, evens its overall record at 3-3 and remains undefeated (3-0) in the new Sports and Rec Center. The sixth-ranked Anchormen are now 3-10.
  • Marsh Shines for Wrestling at Johnson & Wales Quad

    Providence, RI --- Freshman Justin Marsh won all three of his bouts as the WPI wrestling team participated Saturday in the Johnson & Wales quad. The Engineers fell 22-18 in their opener against Oneonta State, lost to Williams 29-9 in the middle match and dropped a 37-12 decision to the host Wildcats in the finale. WPI (2-3) is off until after the New Year’s holiday when host Rhode Island College in the Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday, January 9th. The first bout it slated for 7pm.
  • Freilich Lifts Wrestling to Fifth Place Finish at RIT Invitational

    Rochester, NY --- Alex Freilich headlined seven place winners for the WPI wrestling team as the Engineers finished five at the competitive RIT Invitational on Saturday. As a team, WPI amassed 102 points and were just six points out of fourth place. Freilich did his damage with pins at 174 pounds. He reached the championship bout by registering a pair of first periods falls around a second-period pin before falling in the finals. Tyler Tilbe and Mike Perruccio both registered third-place showings.
  • Wrestling Opens Sports and Rec Center With Sweep of Norwich and Southern Maine
    November 17, 2012
    Worcester, MA --- Five different WPI wrestlers posted multiple victories to power the Engineers to a sweep of visiting Norwich and Southern Maine Saturday afternoon in the new Sports and Recreation Center. WPI took the middle match against Norwich 34-21 and the nightcap versus Southern Maine 24-21. Southern Maine took the opening match-up with Norwich 49-6. In both of its victories, WPI got off to fast starts, seeing the combination of Andrew Tanner, Justin Marsh and Zach Hartzell going a perfect 6-0.
  • Burke Earns New England Wrestling Association Rookie of the Week Honor

    Middletown, CT --- WPI freshman wrestler Tanner Burke has been selected New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 11th.The freshman is one of four WPI wrestlers to earn an initial regional ranking within New England. Tyler Tilbe and Burke are fourth at 141 and 149 pounds respectively while junior Alex Freilich is fifth at 174 and Andrew Tanner is sixth at 157.
  • Burke Claims 149 Pound Title for Wrestling at Roger Williams Invitational

    Bristol, RI --- Freshman Tanner Burke captured the championship at 149 pounds as the WPI wrestling team opened the 2012-13 season at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers racked up 79.5 team points as Messiah won the tournament by just half a point over the host Hawks. Burke went 5-0 on his route to the title, including pins in his first two matches. Teammate Mike Perruccio also reached the championship bout at 149 pounds.
  • Wrestling's Hartzell Garners Prestigious Freshman of the Year Award

    Worcester, MA --- Every year at Homecoming, WPI’s Skull Honor Society recognizes an outstanding new student. This year's Skull Trophy for Outstanding Achievement was awarded to WPI wrestler Zach Hartzell. The Skull Trophy is given to freshman students who have done the most for the class and for WPI. It recognizes outstanding performance in extracurricular and academic activities and is awarded at the beginning of the recipient's sophomore year.
  • 30th Annual WPI Hall of Fame Inductions Set For Friday

    WPI will honor this year's Athletics WPI Hall of Fame inductees at a reception and dinner on Friday, October 5th as part of Homecoming Weekend. The 30th annual event will be help in the Odeum rooms of the WPI Campus center with cocktails beginning at 6pm and dinner around 7pm. This year's honorees are: Rick Maguire '90 (Wrestling), Jessica McAlear '04 (Women's Crew), John Pavlos '76 (Men's Soccer), Joel Rousseau '07 (Men's Swimming and Diving), Stan Szymanski '64 (Football and Wrestling).
  • WPI to host NCAA Division III NCAA Wrestling Regional in March

    Worcester, MA --- WPI has been selected as one of six sites to host the 2013 Division III Wrestling Regional Championships. The Engineers will host the two-day Northeast regional in the new Sports & Recreation Center on Saturday, March 2nd and Sunday March 3rd. The six-site regional format is part of a new qualification process for the Division III Wrestling Championships, approved by the Division III Championships Committee in April.
