  • Wrestling Highlight Reel in Competition for Best of Brand
    June 20, 2014
    On June 23, voting opens in the “Highlight Reel” category for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)’s Best of Brand contest—and WPI’s wrestling program is seeded third in the field of 14 finalists. The contest, sponsored by the NWCA in collaboration with Elite Level Sports Marketing, recognizes wrestling programs for “their investment in marketing with a goal of continuing to inspire coaches to engage in branding initiatives,” according to the NWCA press release announcing the finalists. It’s the second time WPI wrestling has been so honored; last year, the WPI highlight reel reached the contest’s final round, ultimately bowing out to Maryland.
  • Wrestling's Amato Receives American Legion Military Excellence Award

    Worcester, MA --- WPI freshman wrestler Brian Amato was recently honored with the American Legion Military Excellence Award by the Army ROTC. The award recognizes general military excellence. To be eligible for the American Legion Military Excellence Award, a cadet must rank in the top 25% of their Military Science class and demonstrate outstanding qualities in military leadership, discipline, character and citizenship.
  • Four WPI Wrestlers Honored with NEWA Accolades

    Middletown, CT --- Four WPI wrestlers have been recognized by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA). The Engineers was led by freshman 125-pounder Brian Amato, who earned second Team All-NEWA and was selected to the All-Rookie Team while junior 141-pouner Tyler Tilbe, senior 149-pounder Mike Perruccio and senior 184-pounder Alex Freilich all earned honorable mention accolades. In his freshman campaign, Amato compiled a 23-6 record, including finishing in fourth place at the NCAA Division III Northeast regional.
  • Perruccio and Tilbe Honored as National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-Americans

    Worcester, MA --- Senior Mike Perruccio and junior Tyler Tilbe have been named Division III Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Tilbe garners the honor for the second straight year while Perruccio was recognized for the first time in his career. To earn an individual Scholar All-American honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or average over your last two semesters, qualify for nationals, or place in your NCAA Regional and/or have at least a 67 percent winning percentage.
  • Perruccio and Amato Finish Fourth for Wrestling at NCAA Regionals

    Middletown, CT --- WPI wrestlers Mike Perruccio and Brian Amato registered fourth place showings at the NCAA Division III Northeast regional as the Engineers concluded action Sunday in the two-day tournament hosted by Wesleyan. As a team, the Crimson and Gray amassed 54 points and finished tied for eighth in the 18-team tournament with Oneonta State. The regional tournament marks the end of a season that saw WPI posted its most dual wins in decade with the five wrestlers competing Sunday combining to win 119 bouts this winter.
  • Five Alive: Amato, Four Others Advance to Day Two of NCAA Wrestling Regionals

    Middletown, CT --- Brian Amato reached the semifinals by winning a pair of matches Saturday to headline the WPI wrestling team’s performance on the opening day of the NCAA Division IIII Northeast Championships hosted by Wesleyan. Amato and teammates Brian Jennings, Tyler Tilbe, Mike Perruccio and Alex Freilich are still alive in two-day NCAA national qualifier as the Engineers sit in eighth place as team with 29 points. Amato, the two seed at 125 pounds, began his day with a rare first period tech fall (15-0) over his opponent from Plymouth State before grinding out a 3-2 win against an Oswego State wrestler.
  • Wrestling Closes Out Dual Meet Campaign with a Split at Western New England

    Springfield, MA --- The WPI wrestling team concluded the 2013-14 dual meet season at Western New England on Saturday afternoon, defeating the host Golden Bears 45-6 before dropping a tough 24-16 decision to Brockport State in the finale. Multiple winners on the day for WPI included Tyler Tible, Torin Zonfrelli and Justin Marsh. The Crimson and Gray finish the dual meet season with a 12-11 record, the most wins in a decade.
  • Marsh, Tilbe and Amanto Grab Victories for WPI Against Springfield
    February 12, 2014
    Worcester, MA --- Will Henson’s 9-7 sudden victory win at 184 pounds started a run that saw Springfield win the final three bouts en route to defeating host WPI 23-13 in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match-up on Wednesday evening. WPI had jumped out to a 9-3 advantage with a forfeit from Brian Amato at 125 pounds and a 6-3 victory by Tyler Tilbe at 141 sandwiched between a Tyler Keane 5-2 win for Springfield at 133. Justin Marsh (major decision) also claimed a win for WPI.
  • WPI Wrestling Splits at Tri-Match at Coast Guard with Bridgewater State
    February 09, 2014
    New London, CT --- The quartet of Brian Amato, Tyler Tilbe, Mike Perruccio and Alex Freilich all registered multiple victories as the WPI wrestling team split a tri-match on Sunday at Coast Guard. The Engineers cruised past Bridgewater State 44-6 in the opener before dropping a 17-16 heartbreaker to the host Bears in the finale. WPI is now 11-9 on the season and have won 10 of 15 dual matches over the past month.

    Wrestling's Alex Freilich and Women's Swimming and Diving's Sonja Kent were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Freilich, ranked regionally at 184 pounds, moved up to 197 where he registered a first period pin against his opponent from Plymouth State before defeating the third-ranked wrestler from Southern Maine 5-2 while Kent was dominant in the distance freestyles in a 129-102 triumph over Wheaton on Saturday, capturing the 1,000-yard in a time of 11:06.62 and the 500-yard in 5:27.05.
  • Wrestling Sweeps Tri-Meet at Southern Maine with Plymouth State
    February 01, 2014
    Gorham, ME --- The WPI wrestling team ventured to Northern New England Saturday and used two different scoring strategies to come back to Worcester with a sweep. The Engineers compiled six pins en route to taking a 40-15 decision in the opener against Plymouth Maine before using eight decisions, including three majors to knock off host Southern Maine 27-12. The victories push WPI’s overall record to 10-8 on the win and equals the most wins in a season along with the 2008-2009 team in a decade.
  • Wrestling: Perruccio Atop New England Rankings; Team Cited for Academic Success

    Middletown, CT ---, WPI senior Mike Perruccio has risen to number one in the latest New England individual rankings released by the New England Wrestling Association. He is one of eight WPI wrestlers to appear in the rankings this week. Perruccio went 4-0 Sunday en route to being tabbed to the All-Tournament team at the NEWA Duals. He has won 12 straight bouts, including all 11 of his matches in 2014, is 18-4 on the season with three pins and a major decision.
  • Amato, Tilbe and Perruccio go 12-0 as Wrestling Finishes Sixth at NEWA Duals
    January 26, 2014
    Bridgewater, MA --- Brian Amato, Tyler Tilbe and Mike Perruccio combined to go 12-0 as WPI split four matches to finish sixth at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships hosted by Bridgewater State on Sunday. The Engineers (8-8), who entered the 14-team event seeded sixth, opened with a 43-6 win over No. 11 Bridgewater State before falling 32-10 to eventual champions No. 3 Roger Williams. WPI rebounded by defeating No. 7 Wesleyan 29-13 and then dropped a 25-9 decision to No. 5 Williams in the fifth place match.
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute Names Laurie Leshin as its 16th President

    Worcester, MA --- After a six-month intensive search, the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has elected Laurie Leshin, PhD, as the university's 16th president. Over the past 20 years, Leshin, a geochemist and space scientist, established herself as both an academic and administrative leader, having cultivated an impressive career at NASA, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Arizona State University (ASU), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Leshin was selected to lead WPI from an initial candidate pool of approximately 200.
  • Tilbe, Amato, Perruccio and Jennings Lead Wrestling to 2-1 Mark at Trinity Quad
    January 18, 2014
    Hartford, CT --- Tyler Tilbe and Brian Amato both captured three bouts and Mike Perruccio and Brian Jennings each won twice as WPI went 2-1 at the Trinity Quad on Saturday. The Engineers defeated Wesleyan 21-15 and the host Bantams 33-12 after falling to Roger Williams 35-10 in the opener. The Crimson and Gray dominated the lightweight events en route to posting their first victory over Wesleyan since 2006. It was the first win for the Engineers in series in seven tries over the Cardinals but the Boynton Hillers do enjoy a 27-16 edge in all-time meetings.

    Women's Swimming and Diving's Sonja Kent and Wrestling's Mike Perruccio were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Kent swam the leadoff leg on the 1650-yard relay with Eva Childers, Tori Claverie and Heather Stratica as the Engineers clocked a time of 18:04.40 and placed second in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:59.67 while Perruccio moved to 12-4 on the season with a perfect 4-0 Saturday with victory against Elizabethtown (5-0), Gettysburg (8-2), McDaniel (2-0) and Merchant Marine (4-0) at the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus.
  • Wrestling Falls in 2014 Debut at Rhode Island College

    Providence, RI --- The WPI wrestling kicked off the 2014 portion of its schedule on Wednesday evening, coming up on the short end of a 29-16 decision against host Rhode Island College. The Anchormen earned their fifth straight victory and improved to 5-1 overall, while upping their record to a perfect 3-0 in New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) competition. WPI is now 1-4 in dual meets this season. The Engineers got wins Wednesday from Justin Marsh (major decision at 174), Alex Freilich (pin at 197), Mike Perruccio (decision at 149) and Torin Zonfreli (decision at 165).
  • Amato Honored as NEWA Rookie of the Week; Tilbe Tops New England Rankings

    Middletown, CT --- WPI freshman wrestler Brian Amato has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 15th. The 125-pounder was one of five Engineers to be regionally-ranked this week, including junior Tyler Tilbe who became WPI’s first top-ranked wrestlers since the 2009-10 season. In addition to Tilbe and Amato, Mike Perruccio is third at 149 pounds, Justin Marsh is fifth at 165 and Brian Jennings is sixth at 133.
  • Wrestling Splits Home Tri-Match with Oneonta State and Johnson & Wales
    December 14, 2013
    Worcester, MA --- In a wrestling tri-match Saturday at WPI, Johnson & Wales defeated Oneonta State 25-12 and WPI 33-6 while host Engineers bested Oneonta State 28-18 in the middle match. Against Oneonta State, WPI won four of the opening five bouts en route to the victory. Brian Amato got the scoring started with a win by injury default at 125 pounds before Brian Jennings notched a 9-0 major decision at 133. Versus JWU, Tyler Tilbe defeated New England’s top-ranked wrestler at 141. The junior captured the epic bout 6-5 in tie-breaker 2, wrestling 11 minutes to get the victory.

    Wrestling's Tyler Tilbe and Women's Swimming and Diving's Eva Childers were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Tilbe defeated an honorable mention nationally-ranked opponent in overtime to secure the 141 pound title at the RIT Invitational while Childers broke the 200-yard freestyle record, which had been standing since WPI Hall of Famer Anne Kruglewicz set the mark in 1980, to help the Engineers to the inaugural Gompei Invitational title.
  • Tilbe Takes Title for Wrestling at RIT Invitational

    Rochester, NY - Tyler Tilbe was a champion at 141 pounds and Brian Jennings posted a third place showing at 133 as the WPI wrestling team placed seventh Saturday at the RIT Invitational. The Engineers tallied 81 points on the day, just three points away from the hosts for sixth place. John Carroll won the 11-team event with 140 points. Tilbe took his first career tournament title by defeating a wrestler in the finals who is an honorable mention nationally-ranked wrestler from Oneonta State 3-1 in overtime.
  • Lightweights Shine for Wrestling in Home-Opening Tri-Match

    Worcester, MA --- Norwich heavyweights Anthony Joyce and Steven Maldanado clinched a pair of dual matches for the Cadets with last bout victories Saturday at WPI. Norwich defeated Southern Maine 30-21 in the opener before knocking off WPI in the middle match. Southern Maine completed the day with a 25-19 triumph over WPI in the nightcap. WPI (0-2) had an outstanding day in the lightweights with Brian Jennings, Tyler Tilbe and Tanner Burke all winning twice.
  • Wrestling Kicks off 2013-14 Season at Roger Williams Invitational

    Bristol, RI --- The WPI wrestling team began its 2013-14 campaign Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational. Mike Perruccio reached the semifinals at 149 pounds while Justin Marsh was a placewinner at 165 and Tyler Tilbe advanced to the quarterfinals at 141. As a team, the Engineers totaled 37 points at the event that saw Messiah edge Johnson & Wales and Cortland State to claim the team title. Perruccio began his march to the semifinals with a first period pin versus Norwich, a narrow 3-2 decision against MIT and a solid 8-1 win over Roger Williams.
  • Wrestling Highly Regarded in NEWA Individual and Team Preseason Rankings

    Worcester, MA --- It’s only November but if the preseason rankings are any indication, WPI wrestling fans have a lot to look forward to this winter. Six Engineers are currently ranked in the New England Wrestling Association individual rankings with a freshman included on the watch list. As a team, the Crimson and Gray is ranked fourth, their highest placing in years. The team begins its 2013-14 season on Saturday, November 16th at the Roger Williams Invitational with the home-opening tri-meet against Southern Maine and Norwich scheduled for the following Saturday.

  • Wrestling Video to Meet Maryland in Championship of Best of Brand "Highlight Reel"

    Chapel Hill, NC – In collaboration with Elite Level Sports Marketing (ELSM), the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has announced the eight finalists in the Best of Brand “Highlight Reel” category for programs which created wrestling related videos to highlight aspects of their team’s season and to build their brand in a unique manner. The WPI Wrestling program is a finalist and is seeded fifth in the nationwide competition.
