  • WPI Athletics Announces 2016-17 Department Award Winners

    Worcester, MA-- The WPI athletic department recently honored all of its 20 varsity teams which encompasses over 600 student-athletes at its annual awards banquet. During the festivities, 11 student-athletes were presented with major awards. These accolades highlight some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI who excel both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
  • Tyler Marsh Paces Engineers With Four New England Wrestling Association Accolades

    Middletown, CT --- Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) was named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Co-Rookie of the year as eight Engineers were honored for their work on the mat and an association-best 22 were recognized for their performance in the classroom. Southern Maine’s Peter Del Gallo was the other rookie selection.
  • Day, Nigro and Marsh Key Wrestling’s Second Straight NWCA Academic Top 30 Distinction

    Manheim, PA --- Sophomore Nick Day (Northampton, MA), junior Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) and freshman Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) have been named Division III Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Collectively, the Engineers starting lineup, along with four key reserves, boasted a 3.22 GPA to earn top 30 program status for the second consecutive season. The Crimson and Gray were 19th overall out of over 100 Division III wrestling programs.
  • Marsh, Jendritz and Wensley Land on NCAA Wrestling Regional Podium

    Bristol, RI --- The trio of Tyler Marsh, Stephen Jendritz and Dan Wensley reached the podium for WPI on Sunday as the Engineers competed in the final day of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals at Roger Williams.
  • Marsh and Wensley Reach Semifinals as Wrestling Opens NCAAs with Strong Saturday

    Bristol, RI --- WPI’s Tyler Marsh and Dan Wensley each won a pair of bouts to advance to Sunday’s semifinals while four others remain alive following day one of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championship Saturday hosted by Roger Williams. As team the Crimson and Gray have racked up 41.5 points to place seventh, just a half point behind sixth place Oneonta State. Johnson & Wales leads the 19-team event with 89 points.
  • Amato Caps Outstanding Dual Meet Career with Pair of Wins for Wrestling at Wesleyan

    Middletown, CT --- Senior co-captain Brian Amato closed out his dual meet career with a pair of victories as WPI wrestling concluded the regular season Sunday at Wesleyan. The Engineers (12-12) dropped a 22-15 decision to the host Cardinals before succumbing to nationally-ranked Centenary (NJ) 25-17.
  • Early Dramatics Sparks Wrestling Past Springfield 19-12 in Rare Harrington Dual

    WORCESTER -- WPI opened with three straight third period victories as the Engineers returned to the confines of Harrington Auditorium for the first time in over a decade and posted a 19-12 victory over visiting Springfield on Saturday evening.
  • Shrewsbury Posts Three Wins as Wrestling Takes on Nationally-Ranked Squads at BSU Quad

    Bridgewater, MA --- Heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury was victorious three times for WPI as the Engineers went 1-2 Saturday at a quad meet hosted by Bridgewater State. The Crimson and Gray blanked the host Bears 47-0 in its opening match before dropping a tight 18-15 decision to No. 16 Coast Guard and falling to No 14. NYU in the finale 39-7.
  • Wensley’s 3-0 Day Highlights Wrestling Quad Featuring Pair of Nationally-Ranked Teams

    WORCESTER – WPI sophomore Dan Wensley won three times in Wrestling’s home meet versus No. 3 Johnson & Wales, Southern Maine and No. 15 Brockport. The Engineers fell to the Wildcats 39-6, the Huskies 22-15 and the Golden Eagles 28-11.
  • Wensley Named All-Tournament as Wrestling Advances to NEWA Semifinals for First Time
    January 22, 2017
    Providence, RI --- Sophomore Dan Wensley garnered All-Tournament team accolades and Brian Amato and Austin Shrewsbury won three times each as, for the first time in program history, WPI reached the semifinals of the New England Wresting Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships. The fourth place showing is the best in school history, topping fifth place showings in 2004 and 2016.
  • Jendritz and Lind Victorious Twice for Wrestling at Roger Williams Tri-Match
    January 14, 2017
    Bristol, RI --- Stephen Jendritz and Chase Lind both won twice as WPI went on the road Saturday and split a New England Wrestling Association tri-match at nationally-ranked Roger Williams. The Engineers (8-3) began the day by knocking off Trinity 42-9 before falling to the No. 6 Hawks 23-9 in the final match of the day.
  • Muntz Collects Key Win In Opener En Route to WPI Wrestling’s 3-0 Afternoon
    January 11, 2017
    WORCESTER – Senior Lucas Muntz delivered a key bout against Castleton as the Engineers defeated the Spartans 28-15 while also topping Western New England 37-3 and Mt. Saint Vincent (NY) 39-12 in a rare Wednesday afternoon matinee in the Sports & Recreation Center. Other results included Western New England defeating Mt. Saint Vincent 34-21 and Castleton defeating the Dolphins by a 46-12 count.
  • Jendritz Claims Title, Marsh and Shrewsbury Reach Finals as Wrestling Places Second at RWU

    Bristol, RI --- Junior Stephen Jendritz captured the 133 pound weight class while 149-pounder Tyler Marsh and heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury each placed second to guide WPI to a second place finish at the Scott Viera Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers racked up team 140.5 points nearly 50 ahead of third place Wesleyan. Fifth-ranked and host Roger Williams won the 13-event with 177.50 points.
  • Muntz Posts a Pair of Pins as Wrestling Competes at Northeast Duals
    December 10, 2016
    Oneonta, NY --- Lucas Muntz highlighted five multiple WPI winners on the day by notching a pair of pins as the Engineers competed Saturday in the Northeast Duals hosted by Oneonta State. The Crimson and Gray, ranked No. 25 in the most recent NWCA Top 25, defeated Niagara County Community College, one of the top junior colleges in the country, 33-13 in the opener before dropping one-point decisions to the host Red Dragons (19-18) and No. 14 Cortland State (16-15).
  • Shrewsbury and Wrestling Achieve National Rankings

    Oswego, NY --- Sophomore heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury and the WPI wrestling team each cracked the most recent national rankings. Shrewsbury finds himself 10th in the 285-pound weight class while the Crimson and Gray is 25th in the latest National Wrestling Coaching Association (NWCA) ranking.
  • Amato Wins Weight Class as Wrestling Ties for Second at RIT Invitational
    December 03, 2016
    Rochester, NY --- Senior Brian Amato (Newington, CT) won his weight class and sophomores Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) and Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) each reached the final round as a total of 10 WPI wrestlers reached the podium at the RIT Invitational Saturday. The Engineers finished tied for second as a team at the 12-team event with 121 points, despite not having a 184-pounder compete in a format that award team points to the best finisher in each of the ten weight classes.
  • Marsh Named NEWA Rookie of the Week; Six WPI Wrestlers in New England Rankings

    Middletown, CT --- WPI freshman Tyler Marsh has been tabbed as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sunday, November 134h. The 157-pounder is one of six Engineer grapplers to be regionally-ranked this week, breaking into the rankings at No. 5.
  • Marsh, Lightweights and Heavyweights Propel Wrestling to Home Super Quad Sweep
    November 19, 2016
    WORCESTER --- Michael Curtis and Austin Shrewsbury posted wins in the final two bouts to help WPI rally from 15-14 deficit to defeat Ursinus (PA) 21-15 and complete a three match sweep of a home Super Quad on Saturday at the Sports & Recreation Center. Earlier in the day the Engineers knocked off King’s (PA) 30-12 and upended Norwich 30-10.
  • Four Visit Podium as Wrestling Opens 2016-2017 Season at Roger Williams Invitational

    Bristol, RI --- The WPI wrestling team began the 2016-17 campaign Saturday by finishing seventh at the Roger Williams Invitational. Sophomore Austin Shrewsbury finished second at heavyweight and was joined on the podium by classmate Michael Curtis and the freshman duo of Tyler Marsh and Chase Lind. As a team, the Engineers totaled 80 points overall at the 12-team event that saw the host Hawks edge Johnson & Wales and York to claim the team title.

    The Engineers will be looking to build on a successful 2016 campaign that had them cracking the national rankings for the first time in a number of years. Last year’s team had five freshmen break into the lineup and make an immediate impact. For 2016-17, WPI will look to 2015 All-American Brian Amato and regional placer Austin Shrewsbury, as well as five other returners that made it to the top 8 in the region, to lead the team towards developing a legacy that puts them in the conversation with WPI teams of the past.
  • WPI Poly Club Inducts Six New Additions into Athletics Hall of Fame

    The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce its 34th Class, the Class of 2016. The six newest members were inducted on Friday, October 7th as part of Homecoming Weekend. The inductees include: Edwin B. (Ted) Coghlin Jr. ’56 (Contributor), Craig Dempsey ’81 (Football and Wrestling), Joseph Moskowitz ’05 (Wrestling), Kevin Ranucci ’96 (Football), Michael Shannon ’97 (Men’s Basketball) and Michael Sorrentino ’02 (Baseball).

    WORCESTER --- The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee have announced the inductees for its 34th class, which will be inducted as part of Homecoming Weekend on Friday, October 7th.
