Marsh, Jendritz and Wensley Land on NCAA Wrestling Regional Podium

Tyler Marsh

Bristol, RI --- The trio of Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) and Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) reached the podium for WPI on Sunday as the Engineers competed in the final day of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals at Roger Williams.

Three wins Sunday from the combination of Jendritz and Marsh gave the Crimson and Gray 52.5 points in the two-day event to place ninth in the 19-team event.  Johnson & Wales claimed the overall team title with 171.5 points.

Marsh kicked off his day at 149 pounds with a semifinal match with No. 1 Dan Del Gallo of Southern Maine, who entered Sunday undefeated.  The fourth-seeded Marsh fell 15-4 before knocking off No.7 Thomas Grippi from Johnson & Wales 8-3 to have a chance to reach nationals.  In a meeting with sixth-seeded Carter Armendarez of Wesleyan in the third-place bout, the freshman found himself deadlocked at 1-1 before Armendarez tallied a takedown in the final 30 seconds to surge ahead by two.  Marsh escaped to cut the deficit to 3-2 but was not able to hit a move before time expired and finished in fourth place.

Jendritz needed to win three times in the consolation bracket Sunday to reach the national meet for 133 pounds.  He got off to a good start when he defeated Dylan Jones from Wesleyan 2-0 in the consolation quarterfinals.  It was the rubber match as the two have met three times in the last two weeks, with Jones winning in a dual on February 12th and Jendritz having raced in a preliminary bout on Saturday.  The fourth-seeded sophomore escaped early in the second period and then rode out Jones in the third to secure the 2-0 shutout.  After falling in the consolation semifinals, Jendritz took fifth place with a dominating 14-4 major decision over No. 7 Ian Tolotti of Springfield.

Wensley entered Sunday either needing to win his semifinal bout or a pair of consolation matches at 184 pounds to clinch a trip to nationals.  The seventh-seeded sophomore dropped a tough 3-2 decision to No. 6 Michael Gallagher of Rhode Island College before falling in another tight match 9-7 to No. 3 Deuly Espinal from Cortland State.  In the fifth place match Wensley was defeated by No. 8 Michael DiNardo of Johnson & Wales and placed sixth overall.

Earlier Sunday, three other Engineers wrestled in the consolation quarterfinals.  Fifth-seeded Brian Amato (Newington, CT) was pinned by No. 8 Nick Barbaria of Roger Williams midway through the second period at 125 pounds to mark the end of the standout career of the 2015 All-American.  Eighth-seeded 197-pounder Michael Curtis was eliminated 6-1 by No. 4 Nick Bellanza from Cortland State and No. 7 heavyweight Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) lost 5-4 in the final seconds to No. 6 John Georges of Rhode Island College.

On Saturday, Lucas Muntz (West Hartford, CT),  Andrew Ellis (Arlington, MA) and Ronan Ball (Maynard, MA) registered victories at 174, 141 and 157 pounds respectively while Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) also competed at 165.

Sunday marked the final day of the 2016-2017 season for WPI.  The Engineers had seven different wrestlers record 20 or more victories with Jendritz, Shrewsbury and Marsh leading the way with 27 wins each.
