Oneonta, NY --- The trio of Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) and Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) were a perfect 3-0 as WPI won three matches Saturday, including one over a nationally-ranked opponent, at the Northeast Duals hosted by Oneonta State.
Other multiple winners on the day included Ben Zogby (Franklin, MA), Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI), Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) and Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) as the Engineers (6-0) defeated Niagara Community College 40-8, host Oneonta State 27-9, and No. 16 Cortland State 36-6.
Versus the nationally-ranked Red Dragons, WPI got off to a quick start as Zogby tallied a 8-0 major decision at 125 pounds and Jendritz recorded a pin just 2:18 into his bout at 133. After Cortland State dented the team scoring column with a 8-4 decision at 141. The Engineers responded with three straight wins to jump ahead 24-3. Nigro gave WPI a five-point win with a 17-2 tech fall at 149 and was followed by a second period pin (4:30) from Marsh and a 5-2 victory from Marion at 165.
Cortland State got another victory by decision at 174 pounds before the Crimson and Cray capped the emphatic victory with three straight wins. Wensley pitched a 5-0 shutout at 184 pounds, Curtis outdueled his opponent at 197 by a score of 11-7 and Nick Day (Northampton, MA) added an exclamation point with a third period fall (5:51) at heavyweight.
The Engineers were forced to rally in their middle match against the hosts after Zogby got things started with a pin at 3:49 at 125 pounds, Oneonta State won the next three bouts to surge ahead 13-3. WPI responded with back-to-back first period falls by Marsh (2:03) at 157 and Marion (1:45) at 165 to grab the lead back at 18-13.
With Oneonta State having a nationally-ranked heavyweight, the Boynton Hillers still needed victories and continued the impressive run by registering three straights wins by decision to secure the 27-13 team victory. Mike Ilic (Parsippany, NJ) grinded out a hard-earned 7-6 at 174 pounds before Wensley got a takedown in the final seconds and then added a point on riding time to defeat his opponent 6-3 at 184. Curtis made sure WPI had the team victory when he blanked his opponent 3-0 at 197.
The Crimson and Gray kicked off the day with victories in the first six bouts of the 40-8 triumph over Niagara Community College. Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) got WPI going with a 6-0 shutout at 125 pounds that was followed by a 11-5 win by Jendritz at 133. The Engineers then took multi-point victories in their next four times out on the mat with Andrew Ellis (Arlington, MA) taking a forfeit at 141, Nigro posting a fall at 4:48 at 149, Marsh seeing his hand raised with a forfeit at 157 and Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) notching a first period pin (2:46) at 165.
After NCC won its first of two bouts in the match-up at 174 pounds, WPI quickly restored order as Wensley tallied a 12-0 major decision at 184 and Curtis delivered a pin with 31 seconds remaining (6:29) in his match at 197.
With final exams and the holidays ahead, WPI is off for a month. The Engineers head to Trinity on Saturday, January 6th for a quad with Roger Williams and Wesleyan.
