
WORCESTER -- Mike Ilic (Parsippany, NJ) and Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) teamed up to win all four of their bouts at WPI wrestling swept two matches Saturday at its home super quad in the Sports & Recreation Center. The Engineers shutout Bridgewater State 47-0 in their opener before besting NYU 27-16 in the nightcap.
WPI, ranked 21st in the most recent NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) Top 25, moves its record to 17-4 on the season. In other matchups, No. 20 Roger Williams defeated NYU (31-14) and No. 22 Coast Guard (26-16) and Coast Guard bested Bridgewater 40-9.
WPI found itself down 16-6 against NYU with just four bouts remaining but stormed backed with bonus points in three of the four matchups to take the win. Ilic got the surge started at 174 pounds when he pinned his opponent just 1:52 into the opening period. After Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) received a forfeit at 184 to put the Engineers up 18-16, Curtis posted a comprehensive 6-2 win at 197 before Austin Shrewsbury (Westfield, MA) closed out the contest with a forfeit.
Ben Zogby (Boston, MA) had gotten WPI off to a 6-0 lead after he took his second forfeit of the day at 125 pounds.
In the opener against Bridgewater State, Stephen Jendritz (Rockford, MI) and Curtis tallied first period pins at 133 and 197 pounds respectively while Andrew Ellis (Arlington MA) contributed a second period 17-0 tech fall at 141. The Engineers delivered four straight wins by decision midway through the match, including a 6-1 victory by Jack Nigro (Closter, NJ) at 149, a 8-2 win from Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) at 157, a 9-3 triumph by Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) at 165 and a 10-4 decision from Ilic at 174.
The Boynton Hillers also received forfeits in the morning from Zogby at 125, Wensley at 184 and Mendelson.
It marked the final home regular season event for the Crimson and Gray, who honored seniors Zogby, Jendritz, Nigro and Mendelson before the event. WPI closes out the regular season next Saturday with a 6:30pm dual meet at Springfield before hosting the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional the last weekend in February.
