Springfield, MA --- 184-pounder Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation and Pete Nash (Liverpool, NY) and Ronan Ball (Maynard, MA) both registered first period pins as WPI went on the road to defeat Western New England 30-12 in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) dual meet on Tuesday evening.
With the victory WPI is now 3-1 on the season while the Golden Bears dip to 2-2 overall.
The Engineers, ranked No.12 in the most recent National Wrestling Coaching Association (NWCA) Top 25 and second in the last NEWA Top 10 claimed the last seven bouts of the evening. Nash got the spurt going with a fall at 1:09 at 149. Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), ranked seventh nationally, then followed with a tight 5-4 triumph in a battle of regionally-ranked 157 pounders.
Trailing 12-9 at that point, Ball gave WPI the lead for good when he pinned his foe at 165 pounds in 58 seconds. The Crimson and Gray then posted wins in consecutive bouts featuring regionally-ranked wrestlers. Fifth-ranked Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) defeated the fourth-ranked 174 pounder 7-4 while Wensley, ranked third in New England and ninth nationally, bested the second-ranked grappler at 184 pounds (and fourth nationally) by using the riding time point to win 3-2.
Similarly to Saturday's home super quad, WPI found themselves with some work to do as the hosts jumped out to a 12-0 lead behind a 17-1 technical fall by Nicholas Arborio (Berlin, CT) at 125 pounds, a 4-2 win by decision from Austin Roche (Southboro, MA) at 133 and a 13-1 major decision by Justin DeLucia (Holbrook, NY) at 141.
Next up for the Engineers is a trip to Rochester, NY in an attempt to defend its title at the RIT Invitational on Saturday, December 1st. Western New England is back on the mat a day earlier in a 7pm dual meet at Rhode Island College.
