Bristol, RI --- Dan Aksman (Needham, MA) and George Horta (Milford, NH) each reached the semifinals in their respective weight classes as select wrestlers competed for WPI Sunday in the Scott Viera Open hosted by Roger Williams. The 12-team event did not feature team scoring.
Aksman went 4-1 on the day and ended up in third place at 174 pounds. The sophomore began his run to the podium with a 3-2 victory over his opponent from Navy Prep before a 10-5 decision against a host Hawk in the quarterfinals. After a narrow 7-5 loss in the semifinals, the 174-pounder registered a 5-4 win against a wrestler from AIC and then had a thrilling 11-10 triumph over another competitor from Roger Williams to take the bronze.
Horta opened his day with a solid 15-9 quarterfinal win versus a Plymouth State wrestler. He fell in the consolation bracket and then pinned his opponent from Navy Prep in just 36 seconds before falling in the third place match by close 4-3 decision to his foe from Wesleyan.
Others to compete for the Engineers on Sunday were Christian Curll (Groton, MA) at 133 pounds, Matt Rothman (Orange, CT) at 157, Zach Newlon (Wallingford, PA) at 165, Scott Rementer (East Moriches, NY) at 174 and heavyweight Cam Smith (Abington, MA).
WPI is back on the mat on Saturday, January 12th hosting a quad meet with Trinity, Roger Williams and RIT. Wrestling begins in the Sports & Recreation Center at 11am.
