WORCESTER -- Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) won all three of his matches and Nick Day (Northampton, MA) recorded a match-clinching pin to defeat nationally-ranked Roger Williams as the WPI wrestling team posted a 2-1 record Saturday in a home quad.
The Engineers (7-7) began the day by defeating Trinity 40-3 then knocked off No. 18 Roger Williams 23-17 before falling to No. 25 RIT 27-7. In other matches, RIT knocked off Roger Williams 21-17 on a last-bout pin and blanked Trinity 50-0 while Roger Williams bested Trinity 31-12.
In the middle match against the Hawks, WPI found itself looking at 14-11 deficit with just three bouts remaining. Wensley, ranked fifth nationally at 184 pounds, was ahead in his match but was able to pin his opponent in the final seconds (6:57) to put the Crimson and Gray ahead 17-14. After the Hawks evened the match with a victory by decision at 197, Day took center stage for the hosts, pinning his opponent late in the first period (2:45) to give WPI the victory.
The Boynton Hillers had three winners in the first seven matchups with Roger Williams. Andrew Ellis (Arlington MA) posted an impressive 10-1 major decision at 133 pounds, Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA), the sixth-ranked 157-pounder, won 16-4 by major decision and Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) grinded out a 2-1 victory at 174.
WPI opened the day in strong fashion by winning nine of 10 bouts versus the Bantams. Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) and Day had the only falls of bout. Curtis recorded his pin at 6:39 while Day pinned his heavyweight opponent at 6:27. Three wrestlers - Ellis (19-4 - 5:00) at 133 pounds, Pete Nash (Liverpool, NY) (20-5 - 6:42) at 149 pounds and Wensley (16-0 - 4:45) at 184 - won by tech fall while Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) notched a 17-9 in the opening bout at 125.
Zach Harris (Westwood, NJ), Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) and Lind all won by decision with Harris winning 5-2 at 141 pounds, Marion got the better of his opponent by a score of 3-1 at 165 and Lind posting a 6-0 shutout at 174 pounds.
In the finale against No. 25 RIT, Wensley won his 184-pound match 7-5 and Curtis looked strong with an 8-0 major decision at 197 pounds.
WPI, Roger Williams and Trinity all return to the mat next Sunday at the NEWA "Headlock Hunger" Duals hosted by Johnson & Wales at the Providence Convention Center. Action is slated to begin at 10am. RIT is back in action Saturday at 10am in the Empire Collegiate Championships hosted by Brockport.
