Providence, RI --- Top-seeded Tyler Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) and fourth-seeded Dan Wensley (Wakefield, MA) each won two bouts to advance to Sunday's semifinals and three others moved on in the consolation bracket as WPI wrestling competed Saturday on the opening day of the 2019 NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals hosted by Johnson & Wales.
As a team, WPI compiled 51 points and sits in sixth place in the 17-team regional, just 15.5 points out of second place. The homestanding Wildcats lead the event with 91.5 points.
The first round produced six straight maximum point victories for the Engineers, including five period pins. Marsh got the spurt started at 157 pounds with a fall versus Cameron Milliken from Castleton at 2:21. Sixth-seeded Brendan Marion (Norristown, PA) then recorded an injury default over Dillan Palaszewski of Springfield at 165 pounds.
A WPI pin parade followed as seventh-seeded Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) notched a fall at 1:46 against Alexander Hom of Rhode Island College at 174 pounds and Wensley pinned Robert Fryar from Bridgewater State at 184 at 1:14. Sixth-seeded Michael Curtis (Wells, ME) then took down Ryan Gray of Springfield at 197 at 2:25 and sixth-seeded heavyweight Nick Day (Northampton, MA) pinned Frances Bowan from New England College at 2:30.
Marsh and Wensley then punched their tickets to Sunday with quarterfinal triumphs. Marsh shutout Ryan Harty of Springfield 3-0 and Wensley knocked off Michael Gallagher from Rhode Island College 6-1. The duo each have two paths to the NCAA national meet on Sunday. They can win their respective semifinal bouts or win the following two consolation matches.
Marion, Curtis and Day all bounced back from quarterfinal defeats to win consolation bouts and find themselves needing three straight wins Sunday to reach nationals. Marion needed just 48 seconds to pin Jeff Suschana of Western New England while Curtis bested Matt Froio from Plymouth State 5-2 and took out Chase La Russo of Western New England in 3:17.
Two others recorded wins for WPI on Saturday. 125-pounder Michael Aquino (Boston, MA) notched a 16-5 major decision over Wilson Gomes from Bridgewater State and a first period pin (1:39) of Dylan Marone of Norwich while 149-pounder Pete Nash (Liverpool, NY) delivered a 7-2 victory over Riley Tufts from Bridgewater State.
Marsh, Wensley, Marion, Curtis and Day are all back on the mat for day two of the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday. Action commences at 10am.
