WORCESTER --- Paul Detwiler (Fleming Island, FL) and Patrick Irwin (El Dorado Hills, CA) notched early pins as nationally-ranked Coast Guard down host WPI 29-12 in the 2020 debut for both teams.
Beginning the match at 184 pounds, Detwiler got the Bears onto the scoreboard with a fall a 2:08. Jonathan Wagner (Huntington, MA) grinded out a 6-2 decision at 197 before Irwin pinned his heavyweight opponent 2:06 into his bout. The guests pushed their advantage to 20-0 following a tech fall by Parker Brunkala (Mentor, OH) at 125 pounds.
From there the two teams split the remaining six bouts. Chris Cook (Mount Kisco, NY) got WPI into the win column with a 13-6 decision at 133 pounds. The rookie fought hard in the first two periods to register 12 points against his opponent extended his lead with an escape in the final period.
After wins by decision by Coast Guard's Noah Caskey (Oakdale, CT) and A.J. Pagliarulo (Bedford, NY) at 141 and 149 pounds respectively, Chase Lind (Fairfield, CT) excelled for the Engineers, recording a pin at 2:13 of the 157-pound bout. Tyler Marsh (Upper Back Eddy, PA) earned the final points for WPI with a 7-2 decision in a battle of regionally-ranked grapplers at 165. After being taken down in later half of the first period, Marsh gained control on a reversal and subsequent near fall to give him the edge in the remainder of the bout.
The Bears A.J. Aeberli (Warwick, NY) closed out the match with a 8-1 triumph at 174 pounds.
Both teams are back in action at 10am on Saturday. WPI (1-5) heads to Collegeville, PA for the North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus. The Engineers will face Merchant Marine (NY), Alvernia (PA), Scranton (PA) and Penn College, while Coast Guard (1-1) takes part in the Jim Aguilar Invitational at Plymouth State.
