Worcester, MA --- The WPI women's rowing team took home second place as five boats were entered in the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday. The First Varsity Eight consisting of Liz Audet (Terryville, CT), Elisabeth Boulanger (Grafton, MA), Julie Waddell (Phoenix, AZ), Brooke Cotta (Bristol, RI), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA), Corre Steele (Stow, MA) and coxswain Jess Prashaw (East Greenbush, NY) raced to the runner up finish in a time of 16:10.101 and was just under two seconds behind reigning NEWMAC champion Wellesley.
SaraBeth Leach (Fairfax Station, VA), Olivia Durand (East Freetown, MA), Sarah Smith (San Jose, CA), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Alexa Hiznay (Trumbell, CT), Ellen Pierce (Warwick, TI), Brianna Gillespie (Charlton, MA), Rachael Matty (Pomfret, CT) and coxswain Dominique Throop (Fairfax Station, VA) rowed the Second Varsity Eight to a ninth place finish as they posted a 17:19.680. The Third Varsity Eight manned by Lea Dighello (Wallingford, CT), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY), Arianna Niro (Milford, MA), Julia Pershken (Albion, ME), Paige Salerno (Avon, CT), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA), Jennifer Quigley (Kingston, NY), Kelley Slabinski (Plainville, CT) and coxswain Kelsey Stergiou (Manchester, NH) followed in 20th (18:42.510).
The Engineers won the novice race as the First Novice Eight comprised of Nikki Mikolajczak (Virginia Beach, VA), Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ), Zulean Cruz-Diaz (Pharr, TX), Christina Bottom (Auburn, MA), Rachel Brown (Melrose, MA), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Sarah Bucknam (Johnston, RI) and Huda Gad (Cairo, Egypt) and Nicole Quintal (Colchester, VT) turned in a 17:46.169, which was more than 10 seconds ahead of the entry from Wellesley. The Second Novice Eight which includes Gabrielle O'Dell (Saratoga Springs, NY), Tori Patterson (Medford, NJ), Brittany Kyer (Flower Mound, TX), Amber Jiang (Zhongshan, China), Bianca Espinoza (Fresh Meadows, NY), Carolina Leguizamon (La Paz, Bolivia), Hallie Kenyon (East Amherst, NY), Ying Lu (Guangzhou, China) and coxswain Kellie Dickerson (Brookline, NH) crossed the finish line in 15th place (21:11.643).
WPI competes in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.
