Cambridge, MA --- WPI women's rowing competed this Sunday in the 49th annual Head of the Charles Regatta. The Crimson and Gray had a pair of boats participate in the collegiate eights as the varsity eight finished seventh and the second varsity eight placed 21st.
The varsity eight made up of Liz Audet (Terryville, CT), Elisabeth Boulanger (Grafton, MA), Julie Waddell (Phoenix, AZ), Brooke Cotta (Bristol, RI), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA), Corre Steele (Stow, MA) and coxswain Jess Prashaw (East Greenbush, NY) survived a crash into a bridge that earned another team a penalty to clock a time of 15:58.577. It was the best showing by a NEWMAC boat and the Engineers were also faster than eight-time defending national champion Williams.
The second varsity eight comprised of SaraBeth Leach (Fairfax Station, VA), Olivia Durand (East Freetown, MA), Sarah Smith (San Jose, CA), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Arianna Niro (Milford, MA), Rachael Matty (Pomfret, CT), Brianna Gillespie (Charlton, MA), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY) and coxswain Dominique Throop (Fairfax Station, VA) crossed the line in 19:55.424.
WPI wraps up the 2013 fall season Saturday, racing in Saratoga Springs, NY at the Head of the Fish Regatta.
