Worcester, MA --- WPI women's rowing had a strong afternoon Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. The three Crimson and Gray boats trimmed an average of 15 seconds off their morning heat times during their respective grand and petite finals.
The varsity eight comprised of Corre Steele (Stow, MA), Brooke Cotta (Bristol, RI), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Elisabeth Boulanger (Grafton, MA), Julie Waddell (Phoenix, AZ), Anisa Swei (Brookline, MA), Liz Audet (Terryville, CT), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY) and coxswain Jess Prashaw (East Greenbush, NY) placed third in the petite finals behind Tufts and New Hampshire. WPI turned in a time of 7:20.276, better than 15 seconds off its heat time.
The second varsity eight made up of Rebecca Barolli (Middlebury, CT), Kelsey Stergiou (Manchester, NH), Arianna Niro (Milford, MA), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), Kayla McAvoy (Old Saybrook, CT), Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ), Rachael Matty (Pomfret Center, CT) and coxswain Dominique Throop (Fairfax Station, VA) held off Colby to capture the petite final with a time of 7:32.123. The boat bested its morning time by 17 seconds.
The third varsity eight of Sarah Smith (San Jose, CA), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA), Zulean Cruz-Diaz (Pharr, TX), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Alexa Hiznay (Trumbull, CT), Christina Bottom (Auburn, MA), Julia Pershken (Albion, ME), Sarah Bucknam (Johnston, RI) and coxswain Nicole Quintal (Colchester, VT) just missed a medal, finishing fourth in the grand final in a time of 7:41.878.
Finally, the novice four of Tori Patterson (Medford, NJ), Gabrielle O'Dell (Saratoga Springs, NY), Huda Gad (Cairo, Egypt), Carolina Leguizamon (La Paz, Bolivia) placed sixth in its morning heat (8:59.195).
Women's Rowing concludes its season on Sunday, May 11th in the ECAC National Invitational on Lake Quinsigamond.
