Lowell, MA --- The WPI women's rowing team began its 2014-2015 season at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on Sunday. The Crimson and Gray amassed a gold and a pair of bronze medals in their season debut.
The varsity eight made up of Corre Steele (Stow, MA), Rebecca Barolli (Middlebury, CT), Emily Hofmeister (Mission Hills, KS), Maggie Freed (Staunton, VA), Kristin Olson (San Diego, CA), SaraBeth Leach (Fairfax Station, VA), Sandra Garcia-Fine (Cobleskill, NY), Victoria Loehle (Morganville, NJ) and coxswain Basak Soylu (Mill Creek, WA) was third (21:38.561) in the open eight behind Wesleyan and Division I Holy Cross while the second varsity eight of Sarah Smith (San Joes, CA), Kelsey Stergiou (Manchester, NH), Zulean Cruz-Diaz (McAller, TX), Audrey Allen (Topsfield, MA), Julia Pershken (Albion, ME), Kayla McAvoy (Old Saybrook, CT), Kelley Slabinski (Plainville, CT), Jennifer Golden (Norton, MA) and coxswain Nicole Quintal (Colchester, VT) crossed the line ninth (23:05.917).
In the novice eight, the A entry of Jasmine Loukola (Wells, MA), Emily Perkins (Leeds, ME), Rachel Whalen (Centennial, CO), Evelyn Grainger (Millbrook, NY), Rachel Santarsiero (Glastonbury, CT), Klaudia Linek(Woonsocket, RI), Emily Richardson (Portland, OR), Abigail Sawyer (Uxbridge, MA) and coxswain Sarah Bucknam (Johnston, RI) captured the gold (24:09.758) and the B boat comprised of Marisa Sposato (Flemington, NJ), Regina Reynolds (Newark, DE), Ivanna Stuart (Orlando, FL), Steph Silvestris (Rutland, MA), Kaylee Perron (Swell, NH), Rachel Murphy (Mendon, MA), Larissa Naidoo (Acton, MA), Shivangi Pandey (Lunenburg, MA) and coxswain Gabrielle O'Dell (Saratoga Springs, NY) was sixth (28:00.490).
The varsity eight essentially hot-seated into two fours in order to take part in a 24-boat open race. The A boat of Hofmesiter, Freed, Leach, Steele and coxswain Quintal picked up a bronze (24:13.476) while the B entry of Garcia-Fine, Barolli, Loehle, Olson and coxswain Soylu was seventh in a time of 24:47.191.
WPI women's rowing hosts the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta on Saturday, October 11th.
