Women's Rowing Makes 2015 Spring Debut on Charles River Basin

Cambridge, MA --- WPI women's rowing opened the 2015 spring season by competing for the Donahue Cup on Saturday, squaring off with Williams, Connecticut College and Simmons on the Charles River Basin.  The event, originally scheduled to Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond, was relocated to Cambridge due to ice.

Facing a strong headwind of 20 mph with stronger gusts, a heavy chop and whitecaps in the first 1000 meters, WPI, ranked #14 in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Top 15, finished second in the varsity eight.  The Engineers crossed the line in 8:38.8, behind No. 2 Williams (8:25.9) but ahead of NEWMAC rival Simmons (8:46.9) and Connecticut College (9:30.5).

The second varsity eight saw WPI even with the nationally-ranked Ephs until catching a crap 600 meters in.  After taking over twenty second to resolve, the Crimson and Gray placed third (9:15.5) trailing Williams (8:39.8) and Simmons (9:15.5).  Connecticut College finished fourth after an equipment issue caused the Camels to stop for nearly 10 second approximately 800 meters into the race.

WPI Women's Rowing is back in action Sunday, hosting Wellesley, Bates, Rochester and Trinity on Lake Quinsigamond.
