Westwood, MA --- The WPI women's rowing varsity eight has been honored as the NEWMAC Boat of the Week. The group was named as the WPI Women's Student-Athletes of the Week earlier in the day.
Melissa Bazakas-Chamberlain (Belmont, MA), Christine Hovermale (Alameda, CA), Kinsey McNamara (Chelmsford, MA), Marlies de Jong (Huntington Beach, CA), Amelia Harvey (Sudbury, MA), Rachel Lia (South Burlington, VT), Caitlin Kean (Shrewsbury, MA), Eva Barinelli (Tewksbury, MA) and coxswain Madison Healey (Atkinson, NH), the third-ranked team in the CRCA Top 15, defeated No. 6 Smith, No. 5 Wesleyan and Colby, who is receiving votes, to reclaim the Jennifer McLaughlin '06 Cup for the first time since 2011 on Saturday. The Engineers also bested No. 12 Hamilton each day and added a pair of wins over No. 13 Washington College on Sunday. The Engineers also bested Simmons in Sunday's morning row and Mount Holyoke in the Grand Final.
It is the third consecutive year Hovermale, McNamara, de Jong, Barinelli and Healey have been recognized while Bazakas-Chamberlain was among those honored a year ago.
No. 3 Women's Rowing faces a tough test Saturday when it hosts No. 2 Williams, Conn. College, Simmons and Rochester in the Donahue Cup.
