Westwood, MA --- The WPI women's rowing varsity eight was elevated to the No 1 spot in the USRowing/CRCA Division III Coaches Poll and repeated as the NEWMAC Boat of the Week, as recently announced. The Engineers garnered nine of the 10 first place votes to displace defending national champion Bates, who held the position on the scroll for almost exactly two years.
Melissa Bazakas-Chamberlain (Belmont, MA), Christine Hovermale (Alameda, CA), Kinsey McNamara (Chelmsford, MA), Marlies de Jong (Huntington Beach, CA), Amelia Harvey (Sudbury, MA), Rachel Lia (South Burlington, VT), Caitlin Kean (Shrewsbury, MA), Eva Barinelli (Tewksbury, MA) and coxswain Madison Healey (Atkinson, NH) completed a memorable weekend Sunday by defeating then-top-ranked Bates in thrilling fashion on Lake Quinsigamond. The race came down to the final 10 strokes with WPI claiming the victory by just 0.34 seconds over the Bobcats (6:37.40 to 6:37.74).
The Engineers also knocked off then-No. 3 Williams to take home the Donahue Cup for the first time since 2004 on Saturday. The Bobcats and Ephs were the only two Division III teams to best the Crimson and Gray this past Fall as the three crews were first, second and third, respectively, at the Head of The Charles.
Catch the team on Lake Quinsigamond this weekend as WPI hosts Clark, No. RV Colby, No. 3 Ithaca, No. 11 Trinity, UNH, No. 9 William Smith and Conn College on Saturday, and No. 12 Tufts (Bernie Brown Cup), Clark, Skidmore and William Smith on Sunday.
