Women's Rowing Takes Home Bronze at the National Invitational Rowing Championship

WORCESTER -- WPI women's rowing's varsity eight battled through rainy weather and injuries to finish in third place at the National Invitational Rowing Championship on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday.  All three of the Crimson and Gray's entries Sunday reached their respective grand finals. 

The varsity eight rowed the second best time in the morning heats posting a time of 6:50.558 to hold off stiff challenges by Wesleyan (6:51.254) and Williams (6:52.326) to claim Heat #2.  In the finals, WPI (6:54.941) held off a late push by Wesleyan (6:56.813) to claim the bronze medal.  Top-ranked Bates (6:46.525) repeated as champions while Wellesley (6:53.397) was second. 

The second varsity eight advanced to the grand finals by placing second in their morning heat behind Tufts with a time of 7:08.084.  The Engineers finished sixth in the grand final, reaching the finish line in a time of 7:19.183. Bates was victorious in the grand final, being the only boat to go under seven minutes (6:58.465). 

The Crimson and Gray had two entries in the third varsity race.  The 3V placed second in its morning heat (7:24.251) and came back in the grand final and rowed to a fourth place finish with a time of 7:27.408.   The 4V bounced back in the third level final with a time of 7:57.126, over 18 seconds better than its morning heat final, to cross the line fourth.     

WPI will next be in action at the NCAA Championships on Friday May 31st and Saturday, June 1st at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park. The Engineers, who earned the automatic bid as champions of the NEWMAC, will learn the other participants when the NCAA.com Selection Show airs this Tuesday at 4:30pm.
