Women’s Rowing Set to Head to Indianapolis for NCAA Division III Championships

Indianapolis, IN --- No. 2 WPI will be making its second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships, this time as the NEWMAC Champions, May 31 and June 1 at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. The eight team field was released Tuesday afternoon and features No. 1 Bates, No. 3 Wellesley, No. 4 Ithaca, No. 5 Wesleyan, No. 7 Hamilton, No. 10 Pacific Lutheran and No. RV Washington College.

The varsity eight is 15-3 against the other invitees including a win over Bates on April 14 to ascend to the top of the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll for the first time in program history. The Engineers remained undefeated until the Bobcats flexed their muscle at the New England Rowing Championship.

This past weekend at the National Invitational Rowing Championships, the Crimson and Gray were bested by Bates and Wellesley utilizing an alternate lineup in the Grand Final. In all, WPI is 1-2 versus Bates, 3-1 versus Wellesley, 2-0 versus Ithaca, 4-0 versus Wesleyan, 3-0 versus Hamilton and 2-0 versus Washington College. Pacific Lutheran made the trip to Lake Quinsigamond last season. WPI was also 4-0 against No. 8 Williams who did not qualify for only the second time since the championship began in 2002.

The second varsity eight, who is 10-7 against their counterparts, defeated Hamilton three times, Washington College twice and Ithaca once. The Boynton Hillers are also 3-1 versus NEWMAC foe Wellesley, including at the conference championship and in the NERC Grand Final, and a win over Wesleyan as the teams split at the NERC. The Cardinals won the heat and the Engineers were third in the final.

It is the fourth time a pair of NEWMAC crews have been invited to the national regatta and it is the first time in conference history the same two teams have earned back-to-back berths. Coast Guard and Wellesley went in 2003 and Coast Guard and Smith went in 2004.

The program has been led by Jason Steele since being elevated to varsity status for the 1999-2000 season. The coaching staff also currently boasts Pat Guida (WPI '83), Martha Strom, Paul Berube, Elizabeth Crowley and Larissa Naidoo '18.
