Hovermale Nominated for Women's Rowing All-America; 13 Earn CRCA Scholar Athlete Award

WORCESTER -- WPI's Christine Hovermale (Alameda, CA) was nominated as a 2020 Pocock Division III All-America by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) and the senior joined 12 teammates in earning a Scholar Athlete Award from the organization.

The absence of competitive results or a national championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic preclude awarding 1st and 2nd Team All America Awards for the 2020 season.  However, the coaches of the CRCA still wanted to find a way to recognize the top performers in NCAA women's rowing.  For 2020, Division I and II coaches were allowed to nominate up to four student athletes and one coxswain, and Division III coaches up to two rowers and one coxswain.

The 2020 Scholar Athlete Awards requirements have been modified for the 2020 season.  Student athletes must be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50% of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year.

Hovermale is the only athlete in program history to earn multiple All-America honors.  The recent graduate was a first team selection as a sophomore in 2018 and picked up second team accolades last season as a junior.  Hovermale was a three-time first team All-NEWMAC selection, a member of the 2019 NEWMAC Champion, 2018 NCAA Division III bronze medalist, 2019 NCAA Division III NCAA silver medalist teams and rowed on WPI's 2018  and 2019 Head of the Charles bronze medal boats.

Josephine Bowen (Lunenburg, MA) and Olivia Kiristis (Charlton, MA) joined Hovermale as seniors picking up their third Scholar Athlete Awards while senior Ally Sichler (Reading, MA) and junior Amelia Harvey (Weston, MA) were repeat winners from a year ago.  First time honorees include juniors Amelia Papi (South Portland, ME) and Tricia Smith (West Simsbury, CT) and sophomores Emily Adams (East Greenwich, RI), Lexi Baker (Candia, NH), Alexandra Heline (Hebron, CT), Caitlin Kean (Shrewsbury, MA), Ashley Schuliger (Lewis Center, OH) and Eliza Smith (Beacon Falls, CT).
