WORCESTER – Senior Erin Bracken's (Bridgewater, MA) goal ended the game 1:39 into the second overtime to lift WPI to a 2-1 triumph over MIT Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, WPI, who is ranked 10th in the NSCAA regional coaches poll, improves to 6-1 and MIT dips to 4-3. It was the NEWMAC opener for both squads.
Bracken found the top left 90 with help from senior Jane Bingel (Wrentham, MA) shortly after a corner kick in the 102nd minute. Senior Emma Turton (Poland, ME) forced overtime when she eluded the keeper and a defender to take an uncontested shot in the 83rd minute. Classmate Lynn Renner (Aberdeen, SD) was credited with the assist.
Freshman Emily Berzolla (Riverside, CT) delivered her first collegiate goal as her corner kick found the back of the net late in the second minute.
WPI had its best opportunity in the 28th minute as freshman Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) had an open look; however, the ball caromed off the post. The iron came into play once more as senior Erin Bracken's (Bridgewater, MA) bid glanced off the crossbar in the 60th minute.
Sophomore Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) halted three shots as senior Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, NJ) logged a game-best four.
In all, the shots were even (9-9) with the Crimson and Gray holding the 6-3 advantage on goal. Cambridge's Engineers earned eight of the 11 corners in the game.
WPI hits the road for a Wednesday night game at Wentworth. Kickoff is slated for 7pm. MIT continues a four-game road swing at Salem State Tuesday at 4pm.
