BOSTON, MA --- In the first half, freshman Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) tallied one goal and an assist and senior Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) netted a goal to help pace WPI to a 2-0 triumph over the Emerson women's soccer squad in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
Emerson drops to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play, while WPI improves to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1 against NEWMAC opponents.
In the 21st minute of the first, WPI struck first. From the right corner, McCrea crossed a pass over to Bracken, who was in the right side of the box. With her left foot, Bracken rocketed the ball past Emerson senior keeper Melanie Escobar (Torrington, CT) to take the 1-0 edge (24:31). WPI closed out its first half scoring 17 minutes later on an unassisted net from the foot of McCrea off an Emerson turnover to give the Goats a 2-0 advantage (7:55).
Down two goals entering halftime, Emerson were outshot 7-3 by WPI.
Throughout the second half, the defense for both Emerson and WPI pressured one another for no goals were tallied since the Crimson and Gray went up 2-0 at the 7:55 mark of the first. Emerson had its chances to get on the board, but came up empty handed on each attempt. Freshman Chiara Bernardi (Santa Barbara, CA) sent a shot towards the goal with less than 50 ticks left in regulation, but it sailed high and WPI sealed the 2-0 win.
WPI enjoyed a 12-4 edge in shots and tried three of the game's five corner kicks. Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) made two saves and earned the victory for the guests while logging the first 69:19 in net. Freshman Mandy St. Germain (Upton, MA) was not called upon to make a stop in the last 20:41. Escobar finished up with four saves for the Lions.
Both Emerson and WPI return to the field on Tuesday night. The Lions continue its home stand as they welcome Regis on Tuesday for a 6pm contest, while the Engineers play host to NEWMAC foe, Coast Guard, at 7pm.
