WORCESTER – WPI junior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) and Babson junior Maddison Glerschick (Hopkinton, MA) totaled 16 saves as their respective women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night in Alumni Stadium.
The Beavers move to 3-6-2 and 0-1-2 in NEWMAC play while the Engineers are now 7-4-1 and 1-2-1.
Babson dented the scoreboard first at 83:49 when sophomore Maggie McCabe (Weston, MA) found junior Jessica Fernandes (Pawtucket, RI), who one-timed it past the keeper from the top of the box. Senior Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) responded for WPI when she drilled a free kick through traffic at 88:59.
The first overtime session saw Fernandes stopped by Hoops and the Engineer defense blocked a pair of late bids. WPI's only chance went wide.
Babson was awarded two of the three corner kicks and WPI sophomore Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD) had the only good chance in the second extra frame.
In addition to Gierschick's nine saves, McCabe came up big in the 66th minute with a team save off the foot of senior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH).
The Engineers outshot the Beavers 21-12 and were awarded five of the nine corner kicks in the contest.
WPI hosts Emerson Saturday for a 1pm matchup with Emerson as part of the program's Senior Day. Babson welcomes Coast Guard at 2pm, also on Saturday.
