Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College women's soccer team avenged its loss to WPI in the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals from a year ago as it defeated the Engineers, 2-1, in the Pride's regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

With the win, the Pride are now 13-5 overall and 6-4 in the NEWMAC, while the Engineers fall to 10-6-2 on the year and 4-4-2 against league opponents. Springfield College held a 22-13 advantage in shots over 90 minutes of play, while the Pride was awarded five corner kicks to the Engineers' one.

WPI will be the seventh seed in the NEWMAC Women's Soccer Championship and heads to second-seeded Wheaton Tuesday for a first round game. Springfield claimed the fourth seed and hosts Wellesley. Both game times are TBA as of 6:30pm Saturday. Clark edged the Engineers for the six seed by virtue of its 1-0 win on September 16.

In net for the Pride, Ciara Boucher (Manchester, CT) made six stops in between the pipes en route to her 13th win of the season, while her counterpart, Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) stopped nine out of 11 shots on goal from the maroon and white.

WPI had the first chance of the game just 15:31 into the game when Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) gained control of a loose ball on the back side of the net, but the senior's bid trickled just wide to keep the game scoreless. With under 19 minutes to play, Gabrielle Fernandes (North Smithfield, RI) sent in a corner kick that wound up on the foot of Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, NY), before the senior ripped a shot off the crossbar. The rebound bounced down in front of the cage and Sydney Wine (New Braintree, MA) pounced on the rebound and converted her chance to give the Pride a 1-0 lead with 18:19 to play in the first half.

Springfield pushed its lead to a pair just 1:05 into the second half when Quiles drove the right side before centering a pass to Dakota Kelly (Bethany, CT), who fought off her defender to get a foot on the ball, placing a shot into the left side of the net. This goal gave the Pride a 2-0 lead with 43:55 to play.

The two sides played back-and-forth for a majority of the second stanza, but the Engineers were eventually able to get on the board with 2:55 to play as Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) set up Gomarlo for her ninth goal of the season to make it 2-1, Pride. Although WPI scrambled late, Springfield was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory over the Engineers.
