WORCESTER – Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) has been selected to represent the WPI women's soccer team in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl. The game slated to be played on Sunday, December 3rd at 2pm at Merrimack.
Gomarlo paced the team with nine goals and conference with five game-winning goals, and was second in league play with two GWG. The NEWMAC markers were registered in consecutive games at Mount Holyoke and Wheaton while the senior led the Engineers in the opening weekend with the decisive goal at Salem State and versus UMass Dartmouth - which also featured a hat-trick - as well as midway through the season versus Roger Williams.
For her career, Gomarlo scored 17 goals - seven game-winners - and handed out six assists for 40 points in 70 career games, including starts in all but one game played the past two years.
"Sophie Gomarlo has had a tremendous career here at WPI, but her senior year stands out as her best performance," remarked head coach Steph Schafer. "She is a powerful, skilled finisher and her work rate and leadership were invaluable this season. That dedication and determination will be sorely missed on the field next year, but I am very glad that Sophie gets to represent our program one more time in the NEWISA Senior Bowl game."
The all-conference second team forward will be joined by conference athlete of the year Olivia Struckman (Scottsdale, AZ) from MIT, All-NEWMAC first teamer Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, NY) from Springfield and Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) from Mount Holyoke. In all, the foursome accounted for half of the forwards and NEWMAC student-athletes comprised one-third (7-of-21) of the entire list.
