Fitchburg, MA --- Sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) scored a goal in each half while senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) and junior Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, MA) shared the shutout as the WPI women's soccer team secured a 4-0 victory Friday afternoon at Fitchburg State.
The Engineers are now 3-0 and the Falcons move to 1-1-1.
Junior Becca Hapgood (Halifax, MA) notched her third goal in as many games with a clean look after the ball bounced out of a scrum in front of the net at 11:07. Beauton and sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) later teamed up to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute.
Hoops passed her only test by making a diving save on the first of three shots on-goal by sophomore Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, MA). Moments later, Engineer freshman Ranya Basma (Shirley, MA) collected Hoops' throw after two touches and eluded the defender with a move to the right just before attaining her first collegiate goal at 35:32.
With less than 15 minutes left in the game, Beauton corralled a cross after it glanced off a member of each team, turned and buried the ball in the bottom right for her second of the day. St. Germain, meanwhile, stopped three shots in the second half.
Sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, MA) recorded 14 saves, including a number of tough stops, before yielding to rookie Emily Vitale (Ashland, MA) who made two. Mitchell and freshman Elicia Marshall (Taunton, MA) accounted for five of Fitchburg State's seven shots in the contest.
Overall, the shots were 28-7, 20-4 on-goal, while WPI was awarded three of the five corner kicks.
WPI returns to Alumni Stadium Sunday for a 1pm meeting with Framingham State. The Falcons head to Elms Wednesday for a 7pm matchup.
