Orrico Scores Twice as Women’s Soccer Tops Smith in First NEWMAC Win of 2018

WORCESTER – Sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) scored both goals in WPI's 2-0 victory over visiting Smith in a NEWMAC women's soccer match Saturday afternoon inside Alumni Stadium. The Engineers (7-4, 1-2 NEWMAC) collected their first conference triumph of the season while the Pioneers dip to 6-5 and 1-2.

Orrico's first-half goal came at 24:01 when she collected the ball from the defense and booted a long-range chance past the keeper. Later in the contest, Orrico intercepted the ball and snuck past a defender before finding the back of the net at 76:20. Smith junior Jessica Matsuoka (Redding, CT) accounted for two of the team's three shots, and lone shot on-goal at 66:24.

Senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) made the stop while Smith rookie Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, MA) halted seven, and sophomore Julia Donovan (Waltham, MA) tallied a pair. Overall, WPI owned a 22-3 margin in shots and was awarded seven of the game's eight corner kicks.

The Engineers begin October on the road with a 4pm meeting at Babson on Tuesday. Smith hosts Emerson at the same time.
