Babson Park, MA --- Senior Juliana Cabello (Smithtown, NY) scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute to lift visiting WPI to a 2-1 win over Babson College in NEWMAC women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field. The goal was also the first of the co-captain's career.
With the loss, Babson slips to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-0 in league play, while WPI improves to 8-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NEWMAC with its third consecutive victory. The Beavers and Engineers had played three straight overtime games.
Junior Maggie McCabe (Weston, MA) had a goal and junior Olivia West (Norwell, MA) registered an assist for the Beavers. Despite shouldering the loss, first-year goalkeeper Kayla Salmon (Arlington, VA) was superb in net recording eight saves.
Sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) had a goal, while classmate Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) and junior Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD) each finished with an assist for the Engineers, who got seven saves from senior goalkeeper Gabriella Hoops (Stonington, CT).
The sides traded goals over the first 10 minutes of the match as McCabe ran onto a ball from West and volleyed a shot over Hoops for her second goal of the season at the 7:10 mark. WPI struck back less than two and a half minutes later as Orrico headed home a free kick by Southan at the back post to make it 1-1.
Salmon made back-to-back stops on junior Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) and Orrico five minutes into the second half, and Babson senior Jessica Fernandes (Pawtucket, RI) missed just wide with a flick off a free kick by junior Maya King (Auburndale, MA) in the 52nd minute. Fernandes created the Beavers' best scoring chance of the second half when she was taken by Hoops charging into the box in the 63rd minute, but was unable to convert the penalty kick keeping the game deadlocked.
Beauton intercepted a goal kick and broke in on goal, but put her chip just over the bar in the 67th minute. The Engineers went in front for good after Babson was whistled for a foul in the box with less than 11 minutes to go in regulation. Salmon made a tremendous diving save to deny Beauton's penalty kick, but Cabello beat everyone to the rebound and tucked the rebound inside the far post for her first marker of the year.
WPI finished with a slim 14-13 edge in shots and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Coast Guard at 2pm, while WPI visits Emerson at 1pm.
