Boston, MA --- Sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) scored a pair of second half goals, including the game-winner as the WPI women's soccer team upended NEWMAC foe Emerson, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
The Engineers have now won their last four matches and sport a 9-4 record on the season and are 3-2 in conference contests. Emerson dips to 6-5 and 2-2.
After a short corner taken by senior Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, CA), she got the ball back and passed to junior Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, CA) who was at the edge of the 18. Alberts then fired inside the far post to start the scoring at 5:57. Nearly six minutes later, sophomore Lauren Kaija (Reading, VT) was played into space down the right flank, picked her head up and found junior Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) at the top of the 18 who fired first touch into the back of the net with her left foot to tie the game at 1-all.
The game remained tied until sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) sprinted down the left sideline, and found herself in a crossing position. She squared the ball to the of the 18 yard box where Beauton was. Beauton scuffed a shot, but the ball sailed into the net just over the head of the keeper at 81:05. Sixty three seconds later Beauton into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out to give WPI the 3-1 lead.
Senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) came away with a pair of stops in the win for the Engineers. Freshman keeper Megan Rose (Danville, CA) shouldered the loss with seven stops for the Lions.
Emerson held the 8-1 corner kick advantage, while WPI outshot Emerson 17-6.
The Engineers host Mount Holyoke on Saturday, October 13 at 1pm in the lone on-campus home game of the week. The Lions take to the road on Tuesday for a 1pm appointment at Wheaton.
